DEPLETION OF COAL AND OUTAGES OF POWER.

        (Open cast Coalmine)

Despite the assurance by the Central Government that there is no any consequences by the reported coal shortage, media continue to report about imminent power outages. According to different media reports few thermal power units in Punjab and a Power plant owned by Tatas in Gujarat have been temporarily shut down. Media further reports that load shedding have been announced in Punjab for different durations and UP, Rajasthan and Haryana informed about possible power cuts. However Central Government have issued strict warning to power distribution companies that there should not be any power cut. Similar advise have been given to the Tatas too.

A very recent report by India Today shows that 'three power stations shut in Punjab, four in Kerala and thirteen in Maharashtra, due to shortage of coal'. Union Power Minister has assured that coal supply will be maintained; the report further says.

The reason for the depletion of coal stocks at the power plant are said to be the unprecedented increase in demand for electricity due to the revival of the economy, heavy rains in coal mine areas during September 2021 thereby adversely affecting the coal production as well as despatch of coal from mines. Another reason is increase in prices of imported coal to a high level. Non-building of adequate coal stock before the onset of monsoon is also caused the current shortages.

Coal India Limited has 352 mines as on 1st April 2020. 158 of whic are underground, 174 open cast and 20 mixed mines. The all India production of coal during 2020-21 were 716.01(Provisional) million tonnes. In 2019-20 it was 730.87 million tonnes. Coal import during 2019-20 were 248.53 MT and in 2020-21 were 215.25 MT (Provisional).

The total installed power generation capacity in India as on June 30, 2021 is 3,84,115.94 MW. 52.68% of this is coal based and that works out to 2,02,364.50 MW
The remaining are using Lignite, Gas and Diesel as fuel. Other units are Nuclear, Hydro and Renewable. In the renewable sector, solar, wind power, biomass, small hydro and waste are used.
