CAN INDIA HAVE TWO PARTY POLITICAL SYSTEM?

It is the most appropriate time that we must ask this question to ourselves. USA, one of the strongest democratic nation in the world have a two party system. Small countries like Zimbabwe, Jamaica, Bahamas and Malta have established two party systems. In UK, since 1920, there are two parties in the front. Those are Conservative party and the Labour party. However there is another party called Liberal  party too in the arena, but they stand with the conservatives. One of the best managed and happiest countries in the world, New Zealand has different electoral systems. New Zealanders have two votes; one for electing the Member of Parliament and the other for one of the recognised parties.

Iceland is one of the safest countries for women in the world. Women have equality there in true sense. With all these, Iceland have a multi party system.  There are 63 members in the parliament representing different parties. However, once elected as Members of Parliament, they all jointly elect their President. Surprisingly all these things happen there happily and peacefully because the population of Iceland is only little more than 3.6 lakhs.

Coming back to India, we Indians have unfortunately become addict to multi party system. Countless number of parties representing every state, region, community, religion of the country are there to fight with each other in every election. It must be the fate of 1.39 billion Indians that these innumerable parties have made this great country one of the most corrupt in the world. Horse trading is a  standard practice in a muti party system. Eventually horse trading lead to corruption and a chain reaction thereby pave the way for crimes too.

All those who wish to eradicate corruption and crime from our country should find ways and means to introduce a two party political system in India. We became free from the British in 1947 and simultaneously admitted slavery from an unknown political system and being continued with it. We cannot wait for a new Mahatma Gandhi to liberate us from this cruel political system. Each one of us to become a Gandhi for our own liberation.
