CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATION

Civil Service examination was started in London in 1855 as per the directives of the Civil Service Commission set up in 1854. The examination for Indian Civil Service was also held in London. The age limit was, minimum 18 years and maximum 23 years. The report by Lord Macaulay came to the British Parliament in 1854 introduced Civil Service in India. As the European Classic had a predominant share of marks, Indian students found difficulty in scoring. In 1864,  Satyendranath Tagore the brother of Rabindranath Tagore was the first Indian to succeed. Though Indians had continuously requested to conduct the exams in India the British didn't concede to it, primarily because they never wanted many Indians to get into Civil Service. However from 1922 onwards the Indian Civil Service Examination began to be held in India. Allahabad was  first center.

When Union Public Service Commission started conducting the examinations in India after independence, the exams were conducted in three phases with a total duration of 32 hours. An average of 9 to 10 lakhs students are applying every year and around 5.5 lakhs students appear for the preliminary exams. The qualification prescribed is a duly approved degree and the age limit is 21 years to 32 years with provisions of upper age limit. General category candidates can have 6 attempts to appear for the exams and others can make 9 attempts. In 2018, the number of candidates appeared for the Prelims were 4,93,972, Mains 10,468, appeared for interviews 1,994 and selected were 758 against vacancy of 759.

(Group B)
AFHCS, DANICS, DANIPS, PCS, PPS.

The preliminary exams consists of two papers. The tests and scoring pattern have been changed from time to time. The Format of CS New Mains are:

All prime Indian languages are allowed for the exams.

The Civil Service Training Institute on public policy and public administration is the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration situated at Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. On completion of the studies, training is given at New Delhi, Dehradun and Hyderabad. The current Director of the LBSNAA is Srinivas R. Katikithala, IAS.

The existing basic salary for IAS officer is Rs 56,100/- , plus other allowances it makes over Rs one lakh per month. When the officer reaches the level of cabinet secretary the salary comes to Rs 2.5 lakh.
