FOOD SERVED IN JAILS IN INDIA

              (Tihar Jail, Delhi)

As on December 31, 2019 there were 4,03,739 inmates in 1,350 Indian jails. Surprisingly,  according to population of all countries in the world in 2021, there are about 28 countries in the world which have population less than those in Indian jails. 

Generally good food is served in many jails in India. Some people are in the opinion that high quality food in the jails will not deter people from going to jails. Whatever it may be we should not classify the quality of food served in the jails. Now we will find the menu of some jails in India.

Andhra Jail
Break fast - Tamarind rice, every day, served at around 6.30 AM
Lunch - Rice, watery sambar with no vegetables in it. A different type of curry every day . Served at around 11.30 AM
Dinner - Freshly cooked rice with rasam. Leftover sambar from lunch. One egg for long-timers. Served at around 5.00 PM

Taloja Central Jail
Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra
Breakfast - Tea with flattened rice or sheera.
Lunch - Rice with dal, roti and vegetables with no spices.
Evening - Tea
Dinner - Dal, roti, rice and vegetables in good quantity.

Central Jail, Amritsar
Early morning - Tea
Breakfast/Lunch - 7.30.AM. 5 rotis and bowl of dal (This can be had as breakfast or as lunch)
Evening - Salty and watery tea.
Dinner - 5.00 PM. 5 rotis and a bowl of another dal.

Tihar Jail, Delhi
Breakfast - 7.00 AM. Tea and poha/kulche chole
Launch - 12.30 PM. 4 roti, seasonal subzi, rice and dal.
Evening - Tea and biscuit.
Dinner - Same as the lunch with different vegetables.
Sunday - with paneer dishes/ cudhi/ rajma, sweet and curd.
Almost 15,000 people are fed in Tihar Jail every day.

Jails in Kerala
Sunday - Breakfast - Idly/dosa sambar, tea.
Lunch - Rice, aviyal, theeyal, curd
Evening - Tea
Dinner - Rice, thoran, rasam
Monday
Breakfast - Chapati, Bengal gram curry, Tea
Lunch - Rice, fish curry, fried vegetables, pullissery
Evening - Tea
Dinner -  Rice, tapioca masala, rasam, pickle
Tuesday
Breakfast - Upoma, green peas curry, tea
Lunch - Rice, aviyal, sambar, curd
Evening - Tea
Dinner - Rice, thoran, green gram curry
Wednesday
Breakfast - Chapatis, Bengal gram curry, tea
Lunch - Rice, fish curry, aviyal, pullissery
Evening - Tea
Dinner - Rice, tapioca masala, rasam, pickle
Thursday
Breakfast - Upoma, green peas curry, tea
Lunch - Rice, aviyal, sambar, curd
Evening - Tea
Dinner - Rice, thoran, theeyal
Friday
Breakfast - Chapathi, Bengal gram curry, tea
Lunch - Rice, aviyal, erussery, pullissery
Evening - Tea
Dinner - Rice, thoran, rasam
Saturday 
Breakfast - Uppma, green peas curry, tea
Lunch - Rice, thoran, mutton curry, pullissery
Evening - Tea
Dinner - Rice, tapioca masala, rasam, pickle.

Ghaghidih Central Jail, Jamshedpur
Morning - Tea at 6.00 AM
Lunch - 9.00 to 11.00 AM. Rice, dal and vegetables
Evening - 3.00 PM. Tea
Dinner - Around 5.00 PM. 5 chapatis and same vegetables in lunch
Two pieces of chicken is served every fortnight on Fridays.

Bondsi Jail, Gurgaon
Breakfast - 4 slices of bread and half a liter of milk pouch between two inmates.
Lunch - 4 rotis with vegetable curry or dal which is said to be 90% water 
Dinner - Same as lunch
Sundays, curry with potatoes.
