MORE ABOUT TAPIOCA (KAPPA)
The erstwhile Travencore was hit by a famine during the regime of Ayilyam Thirunal Rama Varma (1860-1880). The King adapted several measures to ensure that such an ordeal should never take place in his country. The King's younger brother Viskam Thirunal Rama Varma was a botanist. His interest helped him to reach the fast growing energy rich plant in Brazil. The King got this plant imported from Brazil and widely cultivated in the land of the Royal Family. Later it was shared with many people. That was the beginning of Kappa cultivation in Kerala.
The root is called Cassava. The scientific name is Manihot esculenta. While it is called Kappa in Malayalam, Kuchi/Maravalli Kizhangu in Tamil, Kavva Pendalam in Telugu and Mara Genasa in Kannada.
