GANGA THE HOLY RIVER OF INDIA

We will travel through
the most holy river right from the beginning all the way upto the confluence. The total length is 2510 km.

The Ganga River rises from the Southern Himalayas. The five headstreams of the Holy River are Alaknanda, Mandakini, Bhagirathi, Dhauli Ganga and Pindar.

In spite of it's holiness, Ganga is one of the most polluted rivers. Most populated regions in the world are the Ganga basins. Untreated sewage, waste from countless number of industries, large amount of agriculture waste, half burnt and unburnt human bodies and large amount of carcass end up in the great river all through its course.

Ganga joins with the mighty
river Brahmaputra in Goalunda Ghat in Bangladesh. People in Bangladesh call Brahmaputra as Jamuna. Together when they flow the name becomes Padma. Both together run 250 kms from this point to the sea. During this course the rivers Padma and Meghna join the great Indian river.
Sagar Island or Sagardwip in Ganges delta located about 100 km south of Kolkata is the meeting place of Ganga with the Bay of Bengal sea. In Giria in Murshidabad district of West Bengal Ganga divide into two distributaries Hooghly and Padma. The Padma flows into Bangladesh. It finally joins the sea at the Rajshahi district of Bangladesh.
