When a political killing takes place there would be Bundh, Harthal and a series of protests  all over the state. When 3429 people died and 40,204 injured in 2021, there was no protests anywhere in the state. Because all these were written off under road accidents.

It is too serious a thing that happens on our roads. Let us have a broad view of the causes of road accidents.

Disobedience of law - like over speeding, redlight jumping, drunken driving, mobile phone use, not following the lanes, careless overtaking etc are the prime causes in this category.

Distraction to drivers - publicity boards on roads, road blocks with political flags, decorations etc., delaying the movement of vehicles by public protests, wrong parking on the roads, public assembly on roads etc comes in this category.

Poor road conditions too become a serious cause for road accident.

Natural calamities - though very less comparetively, this too become a cause.

Over and above these egoistical driving is another major cause. 'I wouldn't give way to any one ', 'no one shall be allowed to over take me' etc are habits of some of our drivers that cause certain accidents.

Road blocks due to procession, meetings etc force the drivers to run the vehicle at high speed to reach the destination at appointed time. This too become a cause for accident.

Those who call for harthal and protest meeting against a political killing should look at these killings in thousands per annum.

The practical solution for road accident is to find the cause for each accident and then ensure to prevent such cause all over the country without any political considerations.

Statistics at a glance:
Road accident fatalities in India:
2022 - 1,55,622
2021 - 1,53,972

Road accident fatalities in Kerala:
2022 - 4,317
2021 - 3,429

Lowest road accident fatalities in the world on per lakh inhabitants
Norway - 2.9
Sweden - 3.0
Denmark - 3.0
Israel.    - 3.3
Switzerland - 3.4
UK.          - 3.5

In fact India ranks on the top with 11% share in fatalities in the world. Should we not bring it down? Let us understand that alongwith the government the people too should actively participate and observe in the road safety norms.
