KERALA AND BIHAR - A SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC COMPARISON



Population of Bihar as estimated for 2024 is 13.07 crores and for Kerala is (2022-23) 3.58 cr. As per census report of 2011 the Hindus in Kerala are 54.73%, Muslims 26.56%, Christian 18.38% and others 0.33%. As per the survey  report of 2023 the population of Bihar consists of Hindus 82%, Muslims 17.7% and Christians 0.05%.

The multidimensional poverty index of 2023 shows that 0.48% of population of Kerala lived below poverty index whereas the same in the same period in Bihar was 26.59,%

As per the census report of 2011, 96.8% of households of Bihar have own house whereas Kerala has 90.7% and the national average is 86.6%.

Electricity connection provided in 100% houses in 2017 in Kerala and 95.6% houses in 2019-21 in Bihar 

Total number of colleges in Kerala in 2021 were 1332.  The same in Bihar could not be found in the search. There are 36 medical colleges with 1650 seats in Kerala now. Bihar has 2765 medical seats in 43 colleges as per available information.  Bihar has a ratio 1 doctor per 2148 people whereas Kerala has a doctor per 509 people.

As per 2011 census report the literacy rate of Kerala was 94% and the same of Bihar was 61.8%.
  
 As per the estimate of GDP per capita income of Kerala  for 2025-26 is Rs 416,202 and the same for Bihar is 
Rs 85,359

Kerala has a road length of 615.5 km per lakh population. Bihar has a road length of 861 km per million population.

As per the available report of 2021, the crime rate of Kerala is 1287.7 per lakh where as during the same period crime rate per lakh in Bihar was 224.
Crime against women in 2024 in Kerala was 18,887. (No data about Bihar is available for the same period)
Crime rate against women of Kerala in 2021 was 13,539 and Bihar was 17,950. According to report by the Times of India, Kerala has a divorce rate of 6.3% whereas the divorce nin Bihar stands at 0 - 0.5%.
