ADVANCEMENT OF AI TECHNOLOGY AND DANGERS ASSOCIATED WITH EMOTIONAL BONDAGE OF HUMAN LIFE IN FUTURE

The term AI (Artificial Intelligence) was introduced in the Dartmout work shop in 1956. John McCarthy was one of the most influential person behind AI. He is therefore, known as the father of artificial intelligence in the world. During 1950 Alan Turing published a book called 'Computer Machinery and Intelligence' and this became the reference book for all those subsequently entered into this field. The rapid growth as well as struggle of this technology was in the 1980s. However, in the 1970s itself, the first anthropomorphic robot was built in Japan, during this period. This was the first example of an autonomous vehicle being built by an engineering student. Cars using AI technology can be found across the world.

The prime advantages of Artificial Intelligence is that AI PCs are elevating productivity, creativity, improving better security and privacy through on-device. Enhanced decision making, increased efficiency, cost reduction, improved accuracy etc are among the numerous advantages of Artificial Intelligence. AI is being applied in various fields across the world.

While we have briefly looked at the advantages of AI, we may now try to find out the negatives or the disadvantages too. Over dependence on AI may lead to decline in human intelligence. Another serious negative aspect of AI is that wider application of this may lead to job displacement and the economic impact it may create. AI systems are trained under certain ways and beyond which it cannot function. In short, AI is spanned between two set points, whereas human intelligence is unbound. That must be the natural difference between the divine and human execution. Let us also understand the facts that the same sophisticated systems used to discover novel drugs, screen diseases, tackle climate change, conserve wild life and protect biodiversity can also yield biased algorithms that cause harm and technologies that threaten security, privacy and even human existence.

There are many other serious disadvantages at different fronts caused by wide applications of artificial intelligence. Training algorithms on large data sets and running complex models require vast amount of energy, contributing increased carbon emissions. One study estimates that training a single natural language processing model exits over 600,000 pounds of carbon dioxide nearly five times emissions of a car in its whole life time. Water consumption is another serious concern. Many AI applications run on servers in data centers, which generates considerable heat and need large volumes of water for cooling. A study found that training GPT-3 models in Microsoft's US data centers consumed 5.4 million litres of water and handling 10 to 50 prompts uses roughly milli litres, which is equivalent to a standard water bottle.

The other serious issues related to artificial intelligence in the coming time can be briefed as follows.  Such dangerous and notable issues are misinformation and manipulation. AI algorithms and models are often perceived as black boxes whose internal mechanism and decision making process are a mystery, even to AI researchers who work closely with the technology. There are many such disadvantages with Artificial Intelligence. At this juncture we must look at the natural intelligence of human beings. The average memory capacity of human brain of an adult is 2.5 million Gigabytes. Until recently it was believed that humans used only 10% of the brain capacity. This is now found to be a myth. According to an interview with Barry Gordon, neurologist, published in Scientific American, average human uses most part of the brain during active time, when taking rest or at the time when sleeping. However within the available data we cannot analyse and have a perfect answer whether we can adjust and accomodate the Artificial Intelligence to all our needs.
