HISTORY OF POLICE

The known beginning of police was sometime in BC during the Pharaoh in Egypt. Pharaoh had divided the entire empire into different administrative zones. Each of the zone was entrusted with security personnel to ensure justice. And that must be the first police in the world. The London Marine Police Force is said to be the first modern police force in the world. King Louis XIV in 1666 in Paris established efficient modern police system. Russia has the highest number of police in the world - 546 per lakh of population.

The British Raj introduced the Indian Council Act 1861. This has created the professionalised  police bureaucracy in India. Indian Imperial Police and National Police Academy are the out come of this act. India's police strength in 2010 was 129 per lakh of population. In a list 50 countries India was second lowest. Only Uganda was below.

In 19th century under British rule police force came into existence in Travancore. Oliver H Bensley became the first Superintendent of Police of the state of Travancore in 1881. The strength not police force in Travancore in 1947 was 3626. N.Chandrashekaran Nair was appointed as Inspector General of Police and he took charge on 21st August 1948.
