Science fiction is going to become a reality. In Slovakia a flying car has completed the first inter-city flight. According to Stefan Klein, the creator of this air car, it can be converted from the normal car to an aircraft in just 135 seconds. The prototype of the car completed a successful 35 minutes flying test this July between international airports in Nitra and Bratislava, Slovakia.

In a press release, the company co-founder Anton Zajac said, "Aircar is no longer just a proof of concept, it has turned science fiction into a reality." The hybrid car-aircraft named the AirCar is powered by a 160 horsepower BMW engine and runs on regular petrol pump fuel. It could fly about 1,000 km at a height of 8200 ft and has clocked up 40 hours in the air so far. The two seat model weighs 1,100 kg and can carry an additional load of 200 kg. After making the successful landing in Bratislava, the aircraft transformed into a car in less than 3 minutes and took a drive into the city centre. Some of the features of the vehicle include advanced technologies like retractable wings, folding tail surfaces and parachute deployment systems.

Last year, South Korean automobile company Hyundai had announced that it will be working with Uber to develop Uber Air Taxis for an aerial rideshare network. At the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, it unveiled a new full scale aircraft concept.

The initial flying cars could cost as much as $750,000 (₹6 crores). Soon new collaborations and technologies may come up and thereby size, comforts and price may vary. Whatever may be the future developments, we may find the AirCar on road and air before too far a time.
