COVID19 - BEWILDERED US

Covid19 has so far proved to be an unassailable opponent for the highly resourceful US. Surprisingly the two countries stand one and two in the Covid19 cases of WHO reveal the glaring difference in numbers. While the total number of cases reported so far in US is 20,66,634 the numbers of Brazil is less than half, 8,05,649. Similarly the mortality rate of US is 1,15,141 Brazil's number is only 39,803. Medical experts from different countries find that there is something wrong in the way both the countries tackled the spread of the pandemic.

The cumulative cases in US are, 15 on February 15, 4609 on March 16, 1,93,999 on March 31, 10,98,526 on April 30, 15,60,268 on May 18, 20,45,549 on June 9 and today the number is, 20,66,634. The cumulative death reported are, 0 on February 17, 239 on March 19, 25,852 on April 12, 70,098 on May 4, 97,868 on May 22, 1,15,130 on June 10 and1,16,034 as on this date. Active cases reported until now stands at 11,57,581. Cases per million population is 6,315. Deaths per million is 351. Population of US is 33,08,96,410. Total cases in New York alone is 4,02,021 and death is 30,741.

Different causes are pointed out for the spread. Density of population of New York City is 10,000 per sq.km. Millions of commuters brush up against each other on its packed subway system every day. Keeping distance on its sometimes narrow sidewalks can be difficult. New York City gets more than 60 million tourists a year. Overcrowded and deprived areas, lack of medical care, massive socio-economic inequality etc are also responsible for the high rise of coronavirus spread. President Donald Trump has failed. The US still lacks even a basic plan for controlling the epidemic and restarting the economy.

Governance of a country can be well judged by the way it handles an emergency situation like this. Under this circumstances New Zealand stands as amodel for the whole world.
