THE STORY OF MOBILE PHONE

Mobile Phone has become the inevitable part of human life. One cannot even think about living without a mobile phone,  that too a smart one. Let us now find the brief history of mobile phone.

In fact mobile phone was invented in 1940s. Then the engineers of AT&T developed cells for mobile phone base stations. However, after a long intervel, the first company to start commercial production only by Motorola on 3 April, 1973. The first mobile phones were two way radio sets mostly used by taxi drivers and officials of emergency services. What Motorola produced were 0G or Zero Generation mobile phones.

The first mobile phone service was offered to the first class passengers of  Deutsche Reichsbahn on the route between Berlin and Hamburg in Germany in 1926. The first call made through a radio telephone in a car was in 1946 in Chicago. Due to the low number of frequencies available the service quickly reached full capacity. The first automated mobile phone was installed in a private vehicle was in Sweden in 1956. Vacuum tube technology was used in this equipment with a rotary dial. The set had a weight of 40 Kg. It had a total of 125 subscribers. Another system was developed by few countries together and introduced in US in 1969. In 1973 Dr Martin Cooper, GM of Motorola made a device for public call. This one weighed 1.1 kg. In 1982 engineers from 11 European countries had meeting to consider the digital cellular system. In 1985  Comedian Ernie Wise made the public mobile phone call in the UK from St Catherine's dock to Vodafone's HQ. Technical specifications for the GSM standard was approved in 1987 based on digital technology, different frequency bands, call quality and low costs. The first SMS "Merry Christmas" was sent in the UK in 1992. The first down loadable content sold to the mobile phone was the ringtone in 1998. The Emojis were invented by Shigetaka Kurita in Japan  in 1999. And the mobile phone was made available for under £40 in the same year. The first BlackBerry phone with super email service was also introduced in 1999. The all conquering  handset Nokia 3310 enetered into the market in 2000 and went on to sell 126 million units. In the same year the Sharp-SH04 launched the camera phone in Japan. It came to Europe through Nokia 6750 only in 2002. The 3G standard was adopted worldwide in 2003.

Nepal was the first country to launch 3G services in Southern  Asia. The service covered Mount Everest with 3G. The iPhone debut was in 2007 with a whopping price of $499. The first Android phone came up in the form of T-Mobile G1 in 2008. It was a long way from the high-end Android smart phones we use today. The Google Play Store came into being in the same year and it turned out to be a $77 billion industry. The peak downlink rate of 150 Mbps was achieved in 2009. WhatsApp also launched same year facilitating customers to send and receive messages and calls through internet. This system now has 1.2 billion users sending and receiving 10 billion messages a day . In 2017 Nokia had a revival with 3310 version.

Today Mobile Phone is the most trusted friend for man after God.
