WHAT IS THE CONTRIBUTION OF IPL FOR INDIAN CRICKET?
Till recently prominent Indian cricketers were playing for English County Cricket Clubs. It is a long list of well known players like Pataudi Sr, Pataudi Jr, Farooq Engineer, Bishen Singh Bedi, S Venkat Raghavan, Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, Kapil Dev, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguli, VVS Laxman, Javagal Sreenath and the list goes on and on. Now prominent cricketers from England, Australia, West Indies, New Zealand etc are playing for Indian Premier League Clubs.
IPL started in India in 2008. In 2022 there may be 10 teams.1214 players have registered so far. Among them 896 are Indians. The selectors have now a wide choice to select from for the national team. During 1970s, 80s and 90s there were hardly a few dozens players to select from for the final eleven. Here comes a question as to what is that the national team gained from the playing experience in our own country with top players from international teams.
All said and done, the Indian test team has fallen down from 1 to 3 (16.01.2022) . ODI ranking is 4 (21.01.2022). The ongoing series in South Africa is far below from the expected level of the team. Therefore, while analysing the recent performance of Indian players the question becomes more relevant; what is that the Indian cricket team gained from the IPL?
