DD SPORTS

Being a common man it creeps into my mind for quite sometime that why should we have a national sports channel with nothing new to watch. There are many sports channels vying each other to telecast live national and international sports events. In between these mega circus our national sports channel, DD Sports, screens years old sports events from here and there repeatedly. In fact it looks like a learning App.

Having such number of channels under different classifications DD tops in the country and, therefore, have a large platform to perform. DD is reported to have a net revenue of ₹ 884.4 crores during 2017-18. According to available information Doordarshan operates 46 studios and have a total number of 49 channels. While comparing the financial results of the major channel groups, even the regional TVs are bagging a much higher turn over than the government owned DD. It is high time that we must rejuvenate DD both in the quality of programmes and, thereby, financial earnings. DD is now imposing programmes on the viewers. They must change this attitude and give preference to viewers choices.

Coming back to DD Sports, all arrangements should be made by the management to telecast at least some selected national and international events live frequently. Many athletics events take place within our country every year. DD Sports can telecast these events live without any competition from other channels. There will be commendable viewership for these live programmes. DD can also raise appreciable revenue from these live telecasts.

Despite this positive apprehension of bringing back this to a competitive and commercially viable channel we have in our mind the great public sector telephone company, BSNL. In spite of having a large market, this well established organisation have almost ended up at the feet of private competitors. If the people allege ulterior motive behind this terrific fall there may be something somewhere. Is DD Sports also performing a similar rope trick?
