PUNISHMENT FOR RAPE

(Continued from yesterday)

All said and done, the heinous crime of rape is mounting up in our country. The most pathetic aspect is that some governments try to cover up some cases on political considerations. Police are misused for this purpose. It is high time that the central government must relook into this and try to shape a most comprehensive law throughout the country with the intention of effectively preventing this heinous crime.

Known people from various walks of life may be found and their opinions may be sought for the formation of the law with the sole intention of wiping out this brutal crime from our country. Sociologists, educationists, lawers, judges, women activists, journalists, writers etc both men and women be asked to submit their opinions.

However, the most important aspect to consider in this regard is that even after seven decades from getting independence our women cannot freely move within our country. After dusk even our towns and cities are fearsome regions for women of any age. Why this situation has arisen? The only answer is that we have not taught our people how to respect women and behave with them. If we want that women of the next generation should be safe in our country we must add this subject in the school syllabus from lower classes upto class XII. Modest behaviour with opposite gender, how to care and protect both young and old women, sexual disciplines, violence against women, brutal cases of rape and the punishments thereafter etc should be included in the school syllabus. If these are all taught today's children we can hope for a better tomorrow.
