GENDER EQUALITY IN INDIA

Current population of India is 1,38,00,04,385. This constitutes 52% male and 48% female. The total number of seats in the current parliament are - Lok Sabha 543 and Rajyasabha 245 - which  are shared by 78 female members in Lok Sabha and 25 in Rajyasabha that comes to 14% and 10% respectively. Among the states Kerala has a higher ratio of female population which is 1084 female per 1000 male population. Kerala has 140 + 1 seats in the Legislative Assembly which has 8 female members or 5.7% female representation.

We all talk very high about our democratic system which stands on liberty, fraternity and equality. Articles 14, 15 and 16 of the constitution stipulate equality of all citizens of this country. Here comes the question, why women do not become eligible for this provision of the law. As per the population of women in India, are they not eligible to represent them in the Indian parliament and the state legislative assembly under the same principles of equality. In other words, at the current rate of population, women is eligible to have 48% of seats in both Lok Sabha and Rajyasabha each. Why they are contented with14% and 10% in LS and RS respectively. In the case of Kerala Assembly it should be 52%:48% in favour of women. As such what stops them from claiming their eligible number of seats reserved for them? Among the states Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu stand tall with 14% representation each for women in their respective legislative houses. While the world average for women in parliament is about 24%, Rwanda, Cuba and Bolivia are the highest with 61% and 53% each respectively.

The question of gender equality must be answered by women themselves. No meaning in asking the men to resolve this. The women may either politically or through judiciary may take up with the government for a 50% reservation for seats in both Lok Sabha and Rajyasabha and also in all state assemblies. Making public speaches or writing on magazines cannot bring gender equality in parliamentary democracy.
