DEMOCRACY - A TRAGIC COMEDY

Democracy came to India as a parady. It is running here as a comody. It may end up as a tragedy. Ballot, ink and human; are the three components of democracy. While the ballots may or may not get the count, the ink may take a few minutes to dry up and another few days to get erased. Alas! The last component, human, get erased instantly and become none for the next five years. For unknown reasons we are proudly proclaiming the whole nonsense as democracy. It is high time that the human components should make necessary corrections in the law book of India through a national referendum. If the so called democrats continue to remain inactive, the day is not far when the ten percent political predators will swallow the  ninety percent of herbivores bulged with sweet dreams. INDIA - A MIRROR VIEW

We Indians secured freedom over seven decades ago. During this long span of time we have been ruled by different political parties either singularly or jointly. We have wedded to mixed economy and so far no one wanted a divorce. If we compare the development of other countries with ours we can have a mirror view of ours; an image not so healthy and beautiful. A detailed comparison is made in different aspects. Those who look at these seriously can find that the loud speeches made by our politicians are hollow; there is no substances in those. What we Indians have been taught is to obey and follow the politicians carrying their respective flags. Of late we have allowed political parties to rule our educational institutions too. We are now giving preference to politics than knowledge. At the entrance of some of our renowned educational institutions we can find boards saying, 'Welcome to Red Fort'. Neither the government nor the management of the institution nor the police nor the

ARMS GAME!

According  to reports compiled by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) the following countries are the top importers of Arms in the world during 2018. The value of imports in USD is also given below. 1. Saudi Arabia - 3.81 bn 2. Australia        - 1.57 bn 3. China              - 1.56 bn 4. India                - 1.53 bn 5. Egypt               - 1.48 bn 6. Algeria             - 1.32 bn 7. South Korea    - 1.31 bn 8. UAE                  - 1.1    bn 9. Quatar              - 816  m 10. Pakistan         - 777  m An average one can safely assume that these are the top ten countries in the world who have more enemies or they presume so. In the case of India and Pakistan the presumption weighs more. As far as Pakistan is concerned, war with India is a sheer illusion. Every Indian knows that India will never attack Pakistan until they persuade us to do so. In short, the first gun fire will not be from India. If Pakistan come out of this illusion and come to the open we both

REMITTANCE BY NRI

According  to media reports, Indians abroad have sent a sum of ₹ 5.62 lakh crore to their mother country during 2018. It is interesting to see that we are on top in foreign remittance followed by China and Mexico. Most of these money has come from United States, followed by UAE and Saudi Arabia. While the GDP in 2018-19 is ₹ 140.78 lakh crore this remittance become about 4% of the GDP. Under no parameters this is a negligible amount. This huge foreign money  receipt by the government is with neither any investment nor any effort. What the government ought to do is to circulate an equal amount of rupee within the country. In short, if the government can circulate rupee internally in a systematic manner they can have foreign money correspondingly. If our financial experts can apply this theory effectively the government can multiply the foreign money receipt to any extent. No any investment and no any sweating by government. The people will play with their own money. This huge NRI receip

CORRUPTION - ALLEGATION AND CLEAN CHIT

Allegation  of corruption charges seems to have accepted as a fashion among politicians in India. The money involved does not have any consideration. Any amount of corruption charges levelled can be got erased and obtained a clean chit without getting into any court of law, by making a quick twist, as demonstrated and proved in the on going melodrama of Maharashtra politics.  What is taking place in politics is no more a public affair but confined within a handful of  players just on the playground. Even the media is peeping through the key holes without finding anything. If at all something could be seen here and there, would also not come out to the open for they too are afraid of the demons. The so called legislative members were temporarily put to rest in five star hotels. It is a frequent affair now in other states too. They do not know what is happening in the parties they belong. Who is the friend and who is the foe is conveyed to them by the bosses intermittently. Another surpr

CAN COMMUNISM SURVIVE IN INDIA?

The  Chief Minister of Kerala is now traveling through Japan and South Korea along with a team of ministers and officials to explore avenues to tap resources for the development of the state. While the tour is appreciated for many reasons, it comes to the mind that the CM being an eminent Communist, could have visited North Korea too. This would have helped to have a direct view of the development a communist country achieved in quite a long span of time. In an earlier occasion too the CM preferred to visit US for health related matters. For years, as a communist ideologist and stalwart, the honorable CM used all negative terms about  US for it is a capitalist nation. In such instances, at least in principle, a communist country could have opted. Unfortunately there is no communist country in the world that have attained optimum development to render the required service to their own people. At last, China could achieve the growth it wanted  only after deviating from communism. China c

OTHER DIMENSION

Here   we take a layman's view of the universe. There may be nothing new for the contemporary science in this. Whether the universe had a finite or infinite past could not have arrived at by the medieval philosophers. The English theologian Robert Grosseteste (1175-1253) was the one who brought a theory of the birth of the universe. He described the origin from an explosion and the crystallisation of matter to form stars and planets in a set of nested spheres around earth. Johannes Kepler in 1610 used the dark night sky to argue for a finite universe. Later Isaac Newton described large scale motion throughout the universe. The universe that expanded and contracted principle was first put forward in 1791 by Erasmus Darwin. This cyclic system was further confirmed by Edgar Allan Poe in 1848. Vesto Slipher in the 1910s determined that spiral nebulae or spiral galaxies were receding from earth. During the same decade Albert Einstein described the universe (i.e. the space-time metric) b

CONTINUOUS SUICIDES IN IITs

An average of five suicide deaths are reported from eight IITs of India every year. 52 deaths are reported during the past ten years from eight IITs all over India. According to media reports, four suicides have already taken place in Chennai IIT alone this year. The last case reported is that of a brilliant student from Kerala. As the father of the deceased could bring up the matter to the public attention, it has been echoed here and there including the Indian parliament. When such huge number of suicides are reported from one of the premier educational institutions of India, it is a matter of deep regret to say that neither any of the state governments concerned nor the central government came up to probe the matter effectively and find the exact cause of the deaths. At the initial stage itself the department of education, government of India should have enquired the cases and took stern measures to prevent the recurrence. INTERPRETATION OF LAW IN INDIA

While going through the media reports or watching the political discussion on a particular subject one get the feeling that our law can be interpreted to choices. This is further underlined when different opinions are expressed by different members of jury appointed on a particular matter. Similarly, there is a firm belief that if a case is pleaded by a lawyer of repute the outcome will be different than by a lawyer of not so repute. Such instances show that our law can be interpreted to choices. If it is so, can we do something to make our law uninterpretable, should be thought by experts of the law. LITERACY IN INDIA

The effective literacy rate as per the working definition of literacy in the Indian census since 1991 is - the total percentage of the population of an area at a particular time aged seven years or above who can read and write with understanding. In order to stand among the advanced countries of the world let us admit this. Unless we maintain a time frame for this, even after hundred years, this will remain as our literacy standard. If we have a positive, realistic and optimistic outlook in this matter we must change the primary definition every 3/4 years. For instance, if the basic literacy standard today is that of LKG after a given period of time it should become UKG and then class I, II, III and so on and later, say after a few decades it should reach the degree standard. Until we raise the level continuously we cannot be called literates and stand among the people of other countries. The politicians, the senior government officials and the media should concentrate on this matter

DD SPORTS

Being  a common man it creeps into my mind for quite sometime that why should we have a national sports channel with nothing new to watch. There are many sports channels vying each other to telecast live national and international sports events. In between these mega circus our national sports channel, DD Sports, screens years old sports events from here and there repeatedly. In fact it looks like a learning App. Having such number of channels under different classifications DD tops in the country and, therefore, have a large platform to perform. DD is reported to have a net revenue of ₹ 884.4 crores during 2017-18. According to available information Doordarshan operates 46 studios and have a total number of 49 channels. While comparing the financial results of the major channel groups, even the regional TVs are bagging a much higher turn over than the government owned DD. It is high time that we must rejuvenate DD both in the quality of programmes and, thereby, financial earnings. DD

SUICIDE BY FARMERS

According  to media reports 3.21 lakks farmers commited suicide during the period from 1995 to 2015 in India. 22,807 of them belong to the state of Kerala where the number of people engaged in agriculture is comparatively low from other states. If we get deep into the matter we can find that these cannot be called as suicide. They were just killed. In order to understand these are killings we must find those factors that led to their deaths. These farmers were neither engaged in a contract nor were deployed for a given return. They were just engaged in feeding the whole Indians, using there own available resources like land, fertilizer, seeds, implements, water, electricity etc. It is not at all a business of high returns. They cannot determine the the price and the market of their products. They were also unable to store their products for long anticipating a better price. Every time they were constrained to sell out their products at a predetermined price whereas most other goods wer

UNIVERSITY DEGREE FOR SALE !!!

Despite  many political adversities Kerala could stand upright in the field of education. Though we do not have any educational institutions of international standard we could find a place in the top layer of our country. Of late things have changed drastically. We have been giving priority to politics than education. We give preference to destruction than construction. We continue to fail to ensure a bright future for the coming generation. Unless we provide them adequate knowledge to compete in the international arena we are certainly moving away from our responsibility. Grace mark by political gurus,  university degree without attending college, employment without proper qualifications etc have already made enough dent on our standard of education. If we are now looking for a politically motivated educational pattern we are going to stand nowhere in our customary competitive level. In the ongoing Koodathai serial murder case enquiry the police could find that the accused Jolly has n

THIRD RATED INTERFERENCE BY CHINA

Why China is interfering in the internal matters of India is not a secret any more. After Tibet, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau China is all set to capture Pakistan. Poor Pakistanis do not know the billion dollar business of China. They have already spent a huge sum in Pakistan. Pakistanis just think that this to set them against India. While that too is one of the reasons, that is not the primary one. When Pakistanis realize the crookedness of their new friend, it will be too late. When India divided UP or Bihar or AP as per the provisions of our constitution, China did not come up with any comments. In a similar situation in Kashmir what made  China to stay behind Pakistan and make noice against us must be something to ponder for the over ambitious leaders of Pakistan. Along with Pakistan China is pressing hard to take the Kashmir issue to UN. When Kashmir remains an internal matter of India, the case of Tibet is not like that. Tibet is an autonomous region recognized internationally,

ROTTEN APPLE

One rotten apple may spoil the whole lot. The Unnao accused must be the most rotten in the party basket. According to the media reports the party is still reluctant to throw away the spoiled one. This so called party representative is the replica of cruelty. All the party functionaries and representatives right up to the Prime Minister may keep themselves far away from him. In case anyone make any interference to bring him out harmless it will terribly damage the party as well as the government because the people are closely watching all that is talking place behind the curtain. On the other hand if the law is allowed to take it's natural course it will boost the image of the party and the government. KV George

KASHMIR - AN INTEGRAL PART OF INDIA

Ev ery Indian chant every now and then since the formation of India that Kashmir is the integral part of India. Finally when the BJP government has taken the decision and complied with the constitutional provisions to officially announce as Kashmir is the integral part of India a section of political parties are raising voice against this.  BJP government might have taken decisions earlier which are not congenial to most of the people and, therefore, to many political parties too. It does not mean that any decisions taken by them are to be sharply opposed. Since it is known to every Indian, I do not want discuss about the history of Indian independence and the formation of Kashmir and the special status given to it under the provision of article 370 of the constitution. However it cannot be ignored that the independent status to this Indian state was born out of a few individuals. Subsequently our neighbour put every effort to turn this status to their favour. They tried to communali

NOSTRADAMUS ON KERALA

Michel de Nostre-Dame is known all over the world as Nostradamus. He was a French astrologer, physician and seer. His book Les Propheties is a collection of 942 poetic prediction of future events. This book was first published in 1555. Nostradamus was born in France in 1503 and died in July 1566. He belonged to a Jewish family. On 1st July 1566 night, before going to sleep, Nostradamus told his secretary, Jean de Chavigny, "You will not find me alive at sunrise." The next morning he was found dead lying on the floor. Many of his supporters agree that he had predicted the Great Fire of London, the French Revolution, the rises of Napoleon, Hitler and Donald Trump, both world wars and the nuclear destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The assassination of John F Kennedy, the Apollo moon landing in 1969, the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986, the death of Diana, the Princess of Wales in 1997 and the September 11 attacks on the world trade centre in 2001 also claimed t

CONSOLATION FROM JUDICIARY

All those incidents  took place in the university campus in Thiruvananthapuram recently put a few things under suspicion. They are:1) The academic ranking by the universities in Kerala 2) The sports quota allotment for government employment 3) Selection methods by the PSC. Since these are very much concerned with the common man, he wants to know whether our existing law allows the judiciary to voluntarily interfere in the matter and issue order for a thorough enquiry in the whole thing's including, i) calling for explanation from the government ii) the concerned ministers' default, if any iii) report from the university. There must be some officials who are responsible for this flaw. Since the people cannot expect any remedial measures from the existing political system they can only repose their faith in the judiciary. KV George

ENERGY SCENARIO IN KERALA

The recent announcement of the electricity minister of Kerala that power cut/regulation will be imposed in the coming days might have induced many to delve into the energy scenario of the state. While Kerala is one of the six Indian states along with TN, AP, Punjab, Goa and Gujarat where every household has access to electricity, the scenario is not so coveted now. We all know that energy has a pivotal role to play in the socio-economic development and human welfare of a country. Economic growth of a country is very much depend upon an efficient and sustainable supply of energy. Uninterrupted supply of power significantly contribute for industrial development, employment generation, export of goods and services, trading activities and the much needed revenue generation of the state. If the state can pump in more money for power generation  the state can become financially stable. However the successive governments have not given adequate attention  to meet the demand and supply of powe

FUEL PRICE

People of India have given another opportunity to Sri Narendra Modi as Prime Minister. Among other things the people have expected that the new government will bring down the fuel price and thereby try to check the price rise of all other commodities. Surprisingly, instead of reducing  the price the government has increased the price again considerably. Now, since the exorbitant burden of fuel price is bolstered by the people,  they have the right to have the analysis of the price of fuel. The petroleum ministry may try to furnish the following information to the people at the earliest convenience. 1. Purchase price of crude 2. Shipping charge (say upto Kochi         port) 3. Unloading and pumping     charge to refinery 4. Refinery expenses 5. Storage expenses (if any) 6. Any other expenses by the refinery 7. Cost of distribution to the dealers 8. Dealer's commission. 9. Profit earned by the petroleum     company. 10.Taxes and duties. 11. Net sale price of petrol and

INDIA IN THE WORLD CUP

Ind ia is now safe in the final round of the world cup. The journey so far was not so safe. India could convincingly defeat some strong teams. Just managed to win against some weak teams. Meekly surrendered to England. The one match left with is against Sri Lanka. That may not be a cake walk for India. Since the outcome of this match has no significance for us, it may be looked as a practice match for the final show. The results of the final round matches shall depend upon the days play irrespective of the opposition teams. Best wishes for Team India! KV George

BRIBERY - A PAT OR PUNISHMENT

It is high time that the central and state governments should take firm decision on bribery. There are two options for the governments. (1) Recognise bribery and make it free from any punishments. (2) Enact strict, time bound and simple law for punishments for any bribery involving anyone. Remove all ifs and buts from the law and make it too simple. There should be a penalty of ten times the money involved and a maximum of one month time for the enquiry. If found true the person concerned should be dismissed forth with and the appropriate jail term should be awarded. Only two categories of people are involved in bribery cases. They are government employees and politicians. Both of them, irrespective of their status, should be dealt with severely. If the governments cannot do this make out a law exempting bribery from any offence. May take a decision and do it fast. KV George

FUND FOR NH DEVELOPMENT

According to media reports the central government is asking the state of Kerala to bring in 25% of the cost of land, amounting to Rs 5,500 crores,  to be acquired for the development of 600 km National Highway passing through Kerala. The state government has expressed their inefficiency to raise this amount now. The way things are shaping up the people are constrained to believe that the so called highway development may not come up in the near future. The state government has only two options in this matter. One, to accept the demand of the center and agree to pay the money and ensure the development of the highway. The other, refuse the payment and forget the highway. Alternatively the state can try to negotiate with the center to bring down the share of the state from 25% to a possible level. However, whatever may be the decision taken, both state and central governments should look at  the truth that over 11 people are falling dead and over 200 people are seriously injured on our

DEBT OF KERALA REMAINS UNCHECKED

The debt of the state of Kerala is mounting since long. Whether it is left or right that rules, the figure is upwards. No effective measures are taken by any government to repay these and to make some check in it. While it was Rs 1,24,081 crores in 2013-14, went upto Rs 1,41,947 crores in 2014-15. Considering the existing resources of the state this is a huge sum. The older generation always advised their dear ones that unless have any means to repay, one should not take loan from anyone. Todays educated ones try to secure whatever is available from wherever without finding any means to repay. The most important thing the people want to know is what these governments are doing with these money other than paying salary and perks to government employees and TA and other allowances to politicians and their staff. Both the political fronts should take  stringent measures to bring down the debt considerably during their respective terms of ruling and it should be ensured that no further

SYRO MALABAR CHURCH IN TURMOIL

What ever is now happening in the Syro Malabar Church is beyond imagination for either of it's own members or other sects of Christianity or those belong to other religions. People suspect whether it is acting as a Church or a commercial establishment or a political organisation. The educated clergy fail to realise the fact the social media, the print media and the visual media are so advanced and all those they try to hide from the public reach them in no time. Above all the rift in the hierarchy is well exposed among the common believers of the Church. The priesthood is competing with one another to meet the media and speak out something against other priests. This must be what Jesus Christ said in a Church, "Take these away, do not turn my Father's house into a place of barter." (John 2:16) The priesthood together has made it a Church without Jesus in it. The following news appeared in the media during the recent past show us what the Church has become now. *

ELECTION AND THE AFTER EFFECT

Narendra Modi will become Prime Minister for another term with a huge majority. Sri Modi could overcome all the allegations raised against him and his party. Now no Indian has the right to talk about petrol price or note ban or Pulwama or economic slowdown or unemployment or any such issues. There is no space left for these things now. Above all no authorised opposition to raise such subjects in the parliament. This coming term will be a cake walk for the BJP government. The party must be thankful to the wonderful planning and perfect execution of the election campaign by one of the best election campaigners India has seen, Amit Shah. However Kerala has moved against the national trend.  Congress, as expected, could bag 19 out of the 20 seats. The remaining one seat has gone to the ruling CPIM. Though this huge win by the UDF was not a surprise, the number expected was around 17. At some stage it was thought to be a clean sweep. All the loosing parties have started their own autopsy

POLITICS OF HUMANITY

It is unheard-of in the recent past that a political news become so consoling , buoyant, cheerful and encouraging. SFI activists from Kerala unitedly coming forward to help a KSU activist who undergoes serious ailment with his kidney. A real politics what the experienced politicians should learn from the youth. This is what the people expect from every politician irrespective of his affiliation with any party. The communist party which is at the receiving end for quite some time for their inhuman activities can wash out their many staines with this single humanitarian act. I wish to congratulate all the SFI youth who have associated with this good Samaritan gesture. Let this be a good beginning in student politics! KV George

REFORMATION OF PRISONERS

'Kerala holds the highest crime rate in India with 1980.01'.  This was a report in the Deccan Chronicle in 2016. Despite being numero uno in literacy the state became top in crime too.  According to available information, crime rate in Indian states in 2017-18, Kerala tops the list with 455/1,00,000. MP is the second with 298, Tamil Nadu 294, Assam 250 and the last in the list is Nagaland with 47.  Further to this there has been a steady increase in crimes committed against children in Kerala according to a data released by the Kerala State Crime Records Bureau. Till October 2018 total number of crimes registered towards offences committed against children in Kerala stands at 3,278. While the police force of the state is doing commendable efforts to register the crime and nab the culprits well within the time, the crime rate is steeply rising. There may be a good number of reason to quote in support of this argument. However, punishment to the criminals is the key factor th

GENE - A DIVINE SOFTWARE

One of the greatest findings of the modern era must be genes and the new introduction, genetics science, may have a wide range of branches in the coming times. The genetics science we call today is just the door of a very large store house consisting of thousands and thousands of store rooms. Through this door God may allow man to enter into His secret compartments. Scrolls of divine writings about the future of every single man in minute details may be found there. Genetics is the study of heredity from parents to offspring. This study is mainly based on genes. Genes are structures found in the cell that consists information about traits that an organism has. Genes are the fundamental units of heredity. These are consists of DNA and are part of a larger structure called the chromosomes. Genes contain datas that determines what characteristics are inherited from the parents of an organism. Genes also come in pairs like chromosomes. Each of the parents has two copies of each of their

INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT IN KERALA

The successive state governments talk loudly during their terms about  different developmental projects in Kerala. Unfortunately it ends in their talks. There is no visible outcome when they depart on completion of the five year term. The first step to be taken for the development of the state is necessary infrastructure. Transportation is the prime among the infrastructure. Let us find some 'commendable' efforts by our political parties in development of infrastructure in our state.  We all have seen how these proposals were shelved  faster than these were proposed. Some of us may remember about a proposal for an express highway from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasergod some years back.  Almost all political parties did their best to get the proposal scrapped. One more old story. Doubling of 114 km railway track between Ernakulam and Kayamkulam via Kottayam was started about three decades ago. The work from Ernakulam to Mulanthuruthy was completed many years ago. The work from Ett
