OUIJA BOARD
Ouija board is also known as Spirit Board or Talking Board. The previously existed talking board was modified by an attorney named Elijah Bond and he got it patented on Feb 10, 1891 as the present Ouija Board. The name Ouija was given by William Fuld an employee of Elijah Bond when he started mass production of the board. There are two verses about the name. One is that Charles Kennard (founder of Kennard Novelty Company which manufactured Fuld's talking boards) claimed that he used ancient Egyptian word Ouija meaning 'good luck'. Another claim is that it came from a combination of French and German words for 'yes'.
The board is marked with the letters of the alphabet, the numbers from 0 - 9 and the words 'yes', 'no', 'hello' and 'goodbye'. A heart shaped planchette made of wood or plastic is placed on the board. The participants keep their fingers on the planchette which is moved over the board. The participants in turn ask questions and get answers from the letters and numbers where the planchette stops. It is believed that spirits come on the planchette and communicate with the participants.
Ouija board is based on supernatural belief and does not hold the support of the scientific community. Scientists believe that the unconscious muscle movement is responsible for the moving of the planchette. Certain Christian denominations, especially the Catholics, strongly discourage the use of Ouija boards. It is also a fact that during world war I, almost every household in the US had an Ouija board. Three million Ouija boards were sold in 1920.
There are Bible verses against using of Ouija boards. Leviticus 19:31, "Go not aside after wizards, neither ask anything of soothsayers ... " . Isaiah 8:19-20, " ... Seek unto them that have familiar spirits and unto the wizards, that chirp and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? ... ". There are unreliable videos in the You Tube about presence of spirits with the Ouija boards when the game is on. There are no factual reports about any predictions or future telling by Ouija boards anywhere.
