RELIGIOUS FAITH OR ATHEISM MAKES HUMAN HAPPINESS ?





The purpose of our hard work in life is to attain contentment, happiness and peace. Every country in the world is doing everything for their people to attain these three. But how many individuals and how many countries could realise even any one of these? According to the World Happiness Index 2023 the following are the top ten  countries in the world in happiness. Some of these countries are in the top ten list for many years. The top countries are:
1. Finland             2. Denmark
3. Switzerland     4. Iceland
5. Netherlands    6. Norway
7. Sweden            8 Luxembourg
9. New Zealand 10. Austria
India ranks 125 in the list consisting of 145 countries.

Population of Finland is 55.4 lakhs (2021). Only 34% of the population believe in God.

Population of Denmark is 58.6 lakhs (2021). Only 30% of the population believe in God.

Population of Switzerland is 87 lakhs (2021). As a whole 32% of the population have no religious affiliation. Out of these 25% are flat atheists. Only there were 1% atheists in 1970.

Population of Iceland is 3.73 lakhs (2021). 10% are atheists and 30% do not follow any religion. There is a fast growth of irreligion in the 20th century.

Population of Netherlands is 1.75 crores (2021).  59% of the population never visited any church.   25% are atheists. There is 11% growth of atheists since 2006.

Population of Norway is 54.1 lakhs (2021). About 70% of the population are atheists. Norway is one of the top ten atheists countries in the world.

Population of Sweden is 1.04 crores (2021). Though only 17% are self identified atheists, as per reports of academic sources it ranges between 46% and 85%.

Population of Luxembourg is 6.4 lakhs (2021). 20% are atheists. 15% believe in personal God. 40% believe in some supernatural powers.

Population of New Zealand is 51.2 lakhs (2021). Population with no religion was 42% in 2013. This rose to 49% in 2018. 15% Agnostics and 13% atheists.

Population of Austria is 89.6 lakhs (2021). No religion 22%. Atheists 14.5%.

The above details of population, religious followers, atheists and agnostics in each of the ten countries that are on top of the world in happiness index shows that it is not the religious teachings (whichever may be the religion) that makes one happy. It is education, culture, discipline, obedience to law, no over attachment to wealth and power etc are that takes one to contentment, happiness and peace.  We Indians are lacking in all these and that is why are placed at 125 in a list of 145.
