CRIME AGAINST WOMEN IN KERALA

Though the people of Kerala boast much about the high literacy rate, political and social consciousness etc we must openly admit that this state is not safe for women.

Crime against women reported in Kerala category wise are given below.
                                   2019     upto June
                                                      2020
Rape                            2076        855
Molestation                4579      1992
Kidnapping                   224           81
Eve teasing                   431        234
Dowry death                     6             5
Cruelty by husband   2991      1239
Other offences          3986       1684

Total                          14293      6090

The above figures clearly shows that women in Kerala are subjected to torture and murder as in any other states of our country. Do the government add these too to their achievements during their tenure?Whether it is Kerala or other states, governments managed by political parties focus their attention towards political and economic advantages. Alas, the highly educated population of the state could not highlight the issues at the appropriate level well in time. The most prestigious fourth estate of the state could also not interfere in the matter significantly. Can the women now rise to the occasion?

Let us now see the crime against women in Spain which is the safest country for women in the world. Spanish population is slightly above the population of Kerala plus about a quarter more.

2019 is said to be the worst year for gender violence in Spain. 55 women were killed in Spain during 2019 by their partners or former partners, and three children also perished. While 2015 saw 60 victims, it was 49 in 2016, 50 in 2017 and 51 in 2018. There were a record 73 cases of sexual assault carried out by multiple offenders in 2019, 60 group assualt cases in 2018 and 14 in 2017.

Population of Spain as on August 18, 2020 is 4,67,54,778. Population (current estimates) of Kerala  is 3,56,99,443.
