SOUTHERN RAILWAY NEEDS TO BE DIVIDED
Southern Railway is one of the 18 zones of the Indian Railways having it's headquarters at Chennai. This zone covers the entire States of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puduchery and parts of Karnataka and AP. SR have a route distance of 5098 km spread across the divisions of Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, Salem, Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram. SR stands at 4th in the route length after NR, WR and NWR. The gross revenue of this zone during 2017-18 wasa ₹ 7670 crores.
While these are the basic statistics of this zone some more facts are to be added to these. Almost all media of the state of Kerala time and again reported about various actions the zone management taken against this state. To name a few here; the two divisions, Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram are generally ignored in many development activities, very reluctant to get new train allocated to these two divisions, new trains given through budget allocation too are delayed for one reason or the other. Some time back new rakes were brought from Kapurthala to replace one old Memu rake of Ernakulam. The whole new set of rake was diverted to Tirupathi - Chennai route by SR headquarters. The long awaited new route to Sabarimala has now stands scrapped. The double line project between Ernakulam and Kayamkulam via Kottayam remains to be completed even after three decades from the date of commencement of work between Ernakulam and Mulanthuruthy. Renovation of many railway stations have not yet been taken up. Many such cases were reported by the media since long but the Southern Railway management is least bothered to look into these.
The state government for their own reasons do not interfere in these things. The opposition parties are busy in their own fields. Even when they had half a dozen ministers at the centre they could practically do nothing for the state. The ruling party at the centre should think that unless they give something to the people they will not give anything in return. The long speeches or colour of flags cannot bag votes henceforth. Political parties should do something what the people need.
The only solution is to create a new zone comprising of Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad divisions as they are now with no alterations. The state government, the opposition parties and the ruling parties at the centre should jointly act on this matter.
