SHOULD WE KILL THE STRAY DOGS?
An estimated two hundred fifty thousand stray dogs are in Kerala. A section of people of the state want to kill these animals but some others want to leave them harmless, but both groups do not do anything either to preserve or to eliminate. According to World Health Organization there are over 200 million stray dogs worldwide. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates about 3.3 million dogs enter US animal shelters every year. There are many shelters in US and all rescued dogs are transferred into these safe places. In Houston, Texas alone there are 1 million stray dogs and in the whole Netherlands there are no stray dogs.
The highest population of man's best friends are in the following countries.
1) US 75.8 million, 2) Brazil 35.7 m
3) China 27.4 m 4) Russia 15.0 m
5) Japan 12.0 m 6) Philippines 11.6
7) India 10.2 m 8) Argentina 9.2 m
Most of the people in the world love dogs and they are part of their families. Since dogs cannot speak there are many people all over the world speak for the rights of these trusted friends. On the other hand 11 countries like China, Taiwan, Vietnam, South Korea, Indonesia, Mexico etc kill around 25 million dogs every year for their food. It is a profitable business for these countries.
The Government of India have made a law, 'Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960' for the safety of animals. Despite the existence of this law there are people trying to find ways and means to annihilate these poor animals. As in some countries across the globe we too should develop dogs parks for the upkeep of these animals. The state of Kerala should take the lead in this. We have enough NGOs who can take up this. We must develop around five to six dog parks in every district. Chicken, meat, fish and hotel waste can be collected and processed, packed and delivered to these parks. Nurseries, fish ponds, pet birds nests etc can be added in these parks to attract visitors. Dogs can also be given to people with a price.
Let us do something with the help of the government to protect these poor animals. There is no meaning, otherwise, in our utterance to the world; "Loka Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu." (May all the beings in all the world become happy.)
