SILENT VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

Government of Kerala seems to be adamant to exploit the Silent Valley National Park in the name of hydro electric projects. Silent Valley with an area of 236.74 sq km situated in the Nilgiri hills in Palakkad dist of Kerala is one of the richest in the world for it's bio diversities. It is the nature's gift to our great nation. Every human in the God's own country should be proud of it. Silent Valley is an unfathomable stretch of flora and founa comparing with any such regions in the world. There are 730 varieties of identified species dwell in this park. Large varieties of butterflies which are not normally found in other parts of the world are spotted here. There are 16 species of birds which are on the verge of extinction are housed here. There are also large species of mammals which too are under the threat of extinction put up in this God's Valley.

This is also the home for large population of endangered species lion tailed macaques. The park is also a home for common animals like tigers, leopards, elephants, deers, wild cats etc. Silent Valley is the natural habitat for, may be, many unidentified life forms too. We are bound to leave it as it is; unharmed in any manner.

It is gathered that the central government has put the region in the buffer zone and the state government
has ratified it in June, 2007. The estimated power output from the proposed project in the Kunthipuzha river is about 120 MW. We have scores of alternatives electricity in Kerala. ANERT has identified 867 untapped sources in the SHP category in different parts of the state with a total output of 330 MW. Instead annihilating this invaluable assets we must look for alternative sources for power generation as no amount of money can rebuild this park tomorrow.

The state government may, therefore,
retreat the steps from the fearsome endeavour without even a second thought. The coming generations shall be thankful to this decision.
