OVERCOME NEGLIGENCE OF TOURISM IN KERALA (Part I)

For reasons unknown, the state of Kerala is not giving due significance to tourism industry. Though the state is limping on the economic front, probably due to the managerial deficiencies,  no result oriented efforts are being taken for the optimum utilisation of available resources to bring up the revenue. After fuel and chemicals, tourism is the one that brings export earnings in the world. About 10% of the GDP of the world is generated from Tourism Industry.

Kerala ranked 9th in the must visit eco tourism spots in the world list of 2022. US magazine has praised this God's Own Country for its spectacular beaches, backwaters, lush green inland, temples, palaces etc as must visit sites. Time magazine has shortlisted Kerala among 50 must explore destinations in the world in 2022. Though others show positive gestures to place Kerala as beautiful must see destination in the world, we ourselves prefer as much silence as possible.

Despite having an outstanding tourism menu, the guests from all over the world are willing to visit this small piece of amazing land,  we the hosts are doing our best to prevent the guests as much as possible. Every now and then for one reason or the other in the names of harthal and strike we stop traffic on all our roads and close all shops. These make the guests stranded at airports, railway stations and bus stands for over twelve hours. Over and above these, in most case they are left with no food as hotels and restaurants remain closed throughout the state. Will they ever come to this place again or recommend anyone to visit here?

Beyond these games, our media reports about adulteration of food and food ingredients, poisonous insecticides affected vegetables and fruits spread across the whole state. Of late there are reports about detection of e.coli in packed mineral water from different parts of the state. What a shameful projection of a top tourist spot in the world.

It is high time that the state government should take every effort to prevent all negative things talking place in our state that cause any harm to the tourist inflow. The state of Kerala, despite having all infrastructure, skilled manpower and an enviable Dreamland, we have utterly failed to market our tourism industry.

Would like to put up the following suggestions for the consideration of the Ministry of Tourism, KTDC and all concerned departments.
(To be continued)
