CREATED ROAD ACCIDENTS

Over 4,000 people lost their lives and around 50,000 people injured seriously on Kerala roads in 2016. These figures are rapidly accelerating year after year. No effective steps have been taken by the government to check this alarming rate of road accidents. In the Tsunami of 2004 the death toll in the state of Kerala was below 200. All available government machineries were activated well in time to deal with the situation. That was, of course, a natural calamity, but death is death, that too when it is unnatural death.

There are many reasons for road accidents like poor road conditions, over speed of vehicles, driving under intoxication, negligent driving etc. These are general causes for accidents. However, there are created causes too that take human lives on roads.

Most important among these is the created traffic block. Political organisations, trade unions, temples, churches, mosques and all other social organisations bring their people to the road to display their strength. In most cases these processions create traffic congestion for hours. Once set free from these blocks the drivers normally accelerate the speed to reach their destinations which are unexpectedly over delayed. Atleast some of them meet with accidents due to the over speed. Those who cause the delay are the real culprits in these cases and they are to be charged with causing human deaths intentionally.

All of us may think whether there is any return to anyone from this show of strength. Absolutely nothing. No one appreciate this nuisance. All religious heads and leaders of political organisations may, therefore, advise their followers to avoid processions of all types on the roads. We are already in short of wide roads and traffic is choked at every now and then in all roads in cities and towns.

If the government do not come for the help of the people, we ourselves are to take appropriate steps within the purview of the law. In the meantime, all religious heads are requested to arrange a joint press conference to announce their decision to stop organising processions of any nature on public roads anywhere in the state, so that others shall follow them soon.
