ORGAN TRADE IN INDIA

Image
Human  organs trade is in the news for quite sometime. According to a report there is a demand of over two lakh kidneys annually but availability through donors is only around 3%. Liver, kidney, pancreas, heart, lung, intestine, cornea etc are the human organs generally transplanted. Organs must be removed as soon as possible after the determination of brain death, while circulation is being maintained artificially. Human organ and tissue transplantation was started in India in 1962. At the initial stage the organ trafficking was rampant as it was not well regulated. The act governing transplantation came into being in 1994 and was subsequently amended in 2011. The new rules came into force in 2014. All relevant aspects like donors, brain death, regulation of transplant activities etc are strictly specified in the law. Human organs trafficking is caused by the large gap between demand and supply.  There is a demand for over 2.5 lakhs kidney every year in India. Only 3% of t

GENDER EQUALITY IN INDIA

Image
Current  population of India is 1,38,00,04,385. This constitutes 52% male and 48% female. The total number of seats in the current parliament are - Lok Sabha 543 and Rajyasabha 245 - which  are shared by 78 female members in Lok Sabha and 25 in Rajyasabha that comes to 14% and 10% respectively. Among the states Kerala has a higher ratio of female population which is 1084 female per 1000 male population. Kerala has 140 + 1 seats in the Legislative Assembly which has 8 female members or 5.7% female representation. We all talk very high about our democratic system which stands on liberty, fraternity and equality. Articles 14, 15 and 16 of the constitution stipulate equality of all citizens of this country. Here comes the question, why women do not become eligible for this provision of the law. As per the population of women in India, are they not eligible to represent them in the Indian parliament and the state legislative assembly under the same principles of equality. In oth

PUNISHMENT FOR RAPE

Image
(Continued from yesterday) All said and done, the heinous crime of rape is mounting up in our country. The most pathetic aspect is that some governments try to cover up some cases on political considerations. Police are misused for this purpose. It is high time that the central government must relook into this and try to shape a most comprehensive law throughout the country with the intention of effectively preventing this heinous crime. Known people from various walks of life may be found and their opinions may be sought for the formation of the law with the sole intention of wiping out this brutal crime from our country. Sociologists, educationists, lawers, judges, women activists, journalists, writers etc both men and women be asked to submit their opinions. However, the most important aspect to consider in this regard is that even after seven decades from getting independence our women cannot freely move within our country. After dusk even our towns and cities are fears

PUNISHMENT FOR RAPE

Image
............. Continued from yesterday Those  who demand death penalty for rapists argue that while committing this crime the accused is in his normal sense. There is always presence of mental element to make physical relationship with a girl even without her consent. Granting imprisonment for several years cannot change the mindset of the accused persons and, therefore, no reformation takes place. Another argument in support of capital punishment is that a rapist is not safe for the society and hence should be given death penalty which can be an example for the society and as such the cases of rape can be reduced. In rape cases,  age of the victim should not be considered for granting death penalty. Rape is more common in India than murder. While murder stands at 2.2 rape is at 5.2 in 2017 according to NCRB. Even though such huge amount of rape cases take place in our country only a very few get public attention and the issue is brought to the streets and demand raised for

PUNISHMENT FOR RAPE

Image
(Report by Times of India dt 26.10.20) Continued from yesterday. We have made enough laws to prevent this most inhuman act. Media reported a case from Uttar Pradesh in the recent past that a young a girl was raped by a group of people and after that pulled out both her eyes and cut off her tongue. Can men become so cruel to fellow beings? The existing law stipulates life imprisonment or even death penalty for rapists, but the crime continue all over the country. There are differences in opinions of punishment for rape. While some suggest death penalty others are against. Let us now find how other countries are handling rape cases. France hand out 15 year sentence for rape, which can be extended to 30 years or life depending on the extent of damage and brutality. China award execution or castration for rape but without proper trial. There are cases of convicted rapists were executed and later found innocent. The punishment in Saudi Arabia is public beheading after administer

PUNISHMENT FOR RAPE

Image
(Report by Times of India dt 24 Oct 2020) Rape  must be one of the most heinous crimes human can do against another human being. The recent happenings in the country ratify this. There is no dearth for rape cases in India. According to a report by Reuters, more than 32,500 cases of rape were registered with the police in 2017 which makes about 90 cases a day in India. Our courts disposed of only about 18,300 cases related to rape that year, leaving more than 1,27,800 cases pending at the end of 2017. The 'Crimes of India -2019' report shows that crimes against women have gone up by 7.3 per cent last year. The country had recorded 3,78,236 cases of crimes against women in 2018. The NCRB data for 2019 showed that the majority of cases were registered under 'cruelty by husband or his relatives' (30.9%), assualt on women with intention to outrage her modesty' (21.8%) and 'kidnapping and abduction of women' (17.9%) Some most horrific cases reported by

PROHIBIT BEGGING

Image
As per the data available with Registrar General of India, Kerala has 3,715 beggers on its streets, among them 1,533 are literate. The statistics reveal that 1,115 are literates but below matriculation, 198 are below graduate, 16 have technical diploma or certificate and 24 are graduates. According to Sri Murugan S a social worker involved in the rehabilitation of street urchins, addiction to drugs, liquor and extravaganza in life led many educated persons into begging. He said that he had rescued a person from begging who was a graduate from BITS, Pilani. As per the data available a begger earns from Rs 200/- to Rs 2,000/- a day. According to a report by better India.com in Feb 2018, quoting the Municipal Chairman, Alappuzha would be made a beggar free town. Beggers from various parts of Alappuzha will be rehabilitated and looked after by the civic body. Those from other states will be sent back to their respective homes. The steps taken by the authorities of Alappuzha cou

MILD DRINKERS AND DRUNKARDS

Image
Alcoholics cannot be categorised into moderate drinkers and heavy drinkers. Alcohol content in different brands are varying from one another. Since international differences in drink definitions are there, alcohol brands of different countries cannot be compared using any standard pattern. Widely used definitions are based on a certain number of drinks consumed in a specific time period. Further to this moderate drinking of one person can become heavy drinking for another due to a number of reasons like health condition, mental stress etc. The normal concept of moderate drinking  is a specific number of drinks in a given period of time. Beer, wine and distilled spirts fall under alcoholic beverages but the alcohol contents in these are considerably varying. Now, looking at drinking in India, the drinks can be broadly standardized in terms of quality and quantity. The drinkers mostly consider themselves moderate drinkers regardless of the amount of alcohol consumed by them i

DANGEROUS DESTRUCTION OF FORESTS

Image
Part- V Forests in Kerala The dense rain forests of Kerala have contributed immensely to make the tiny stretch of land as God's Own Country. The most important forests in Kerala are, Gavi forest, Pathanamthitta, Parambikulam Tiger Reserve, Munnar Deep Forests,  Agasthyakoodam Biological Park, Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary and Nature Camp, Nelliyampathy Hills, Silent Valley National Park, Kannavam Reserve Forest, Thekkady - Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary. Kerala accounts for 21,144 km² forest which makes out 54% of the geographical area. This can be classified into very dense forest - 1,935 km², moderately dense - 9,508 km² and open forest - 9,701 km². The canopies of large tracts of virgin forests include the trees of Anjily, Cassia, Fig, Rosewood, Teakwood, Bamboo, Palm etc and also include the smaller bushes of spices and medicinal herbs like pepper, cardamom, vetiver etc. Kerala forests are home to more than 1,000 species of trees and plants.

DANGEROUS DESTRUCTION OF FORESTS

Part - IV Forests in India Top forests in India are Sundarbans, West Bengal, Gir Forest, Gujarat, Sacred Grove, Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, Namdapha National Park, Arunachal Pradesh, Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand, Bandipur National Park, Karnataka, Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Tamil Nadu and Keibul Lamjao National Park, Manipur. India is not only famous for its diverse  architectural marvels and culture, but also for its dense and vast forest cover. Indian climate befits the flora and fauna. Forest is the second largest land use in India next to agriculture. The forests play vital role in harbouring more than 45,000 floral and 81,000 faunal species of which 5,150 floral and 1,837 faunal species are endemic. The nation has established  597 protected areas comprising 95 national parks, 500 wildlife sanctuaries, 2 conservation reserves covering 1.56 million hectares area or 4.75  per cent geographical area of the country. The rising demand for forest based products and resu

DANGEROUS DESTRUCTION OF FORESTS

Image
Part - III (Continued from yesterday) Forests in India Forests have significant role in Indian literature and culture. Yajnavalkya Smriti written before 5th century AD made cutting of trees as punishable offence. Kautalya's Arthshastra written in the Mouryan period suggests the need of forest administration. Forest was seen as an essential part for a successful kingdom. A 2010 study by the Food and Agricultural Organization ranks India among 10 countries with the largest forest area. Some 5,00,000 sq km which is about 17% of India's land area were regarded as forest area in the early 1990s. India's 0.6% average annual rate of deforestation for agricultural and other land uses in the decade beginning 1981  was one of the lowest in the world and on a par with Brazil. Prior to the 1980s, India deployed a bureaucratic method to estimate forest coverage. In the 1980s, space satellites were deployed for remote sensing if real forest cover. Standards were introduced to

DANGEROUS DESTRUCTION OF FORESTS

Image
Part- II (Continued from 19.10.2020) Most of the tree species are confined within ten countries, namely Brazil, Columbia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Venezuela, China, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico and Madagascar. About 3,91,000 species of vascular plants are known to science of which about 94 per cent are flowering plants. 21 per cent of these are likely threatened by extinction. Close to 70,000 vertebrae species are known and described. Of these, forests provide habitats for almost 5,000 amphibian species (80% of all known species) close to 7,500 bird species (75% of all birds) and more than 3,700 different mammals (68% of all species) Some 1.3 million species of invertebrates have described. It is estimated to go up to 5 million to 10 million species and the vast majority live in forests. Soil microbes, forest-  dependent pollinators and saproxylic beetles play very important parts in maintaining the biodiversity and ecosystem functions of forests. Much of human society today has at l

DANGEROUS DESTRUCTION OF FORESTS

Image
Part - I The total forest area of the world is 4.06 billion hectares. This constitutes approximately 5,000 m² per person. More than half of the world's forests are located in five countries, Russian Federation, Brazil, Canada, USA and China. Deforestation and forest degradation continue to take place at alarming rates, which contributes significantly to the ongoing loss of biodiversity. Since 1990, it is estimated that 420 million hectares of forest have been lost through conversion to other land uses. Between 2015 and 2020, the rate of deforestation was estimated at 10 million hectares per year. The area of primary forest worldwide has decreased by over 80 million hectares since 1990. It is not only the trees that make a forest, but many different species of plants and animals that reside in the soil, under storey and canopy. Total number of species on earth estimate to range from 3 million to 100 million (May 2010). While trees are the defining components of forests a

OLYMPIC MEDICAL

2016 summer Olympic medal table put USA on top with 46 Gold 37 Silver and 38 Bronze with a total of 121 medals followed by Britain 27, 23 and 17 with total of 67 and China on the third place with 26, 18 and 26 with a total of 70. India the second largest populated nation stands at the 67th position with no gold and one silver and bronze each. Why India cannot do what China can? China stood  3rd in the medal rank in the 2000 Sydney,  2nd in the 2004 Athens, 1st in 2008 Beijing and 2nd in the total medall tally (3rd in gold tally) in 2012 London Olympics. In China kids are brought into playing different sports and are encouraged by their parents to take sports as a profession. The Chinese pick the children at the young age and give them adequate training and create a competitive spirit in them. They use their large population for a cut throat  competition to get selected in the national level. They are then provided special training to make them world beaters. The large pool

CONGRESS PARTY

Image
Congress  party's fall is like one from heaven to hade. The party which won 364 seats out of 489 in the Lok Sabha election in 1952 fell to an all time low of 44 in a total strength of 545 in 2014. Maharashtra, a strong hold of the party, has finally fallen to a single seat in the last election. Everything is falling apart, nothing goes well with the party. Many faithful members of Congress have moved to BJP and the flow is going on. Many stalwarts have left the party and joined BJP. Of late, Khushbu from TN left congress and joined BJP. She might not hold a large vote bank but the dent created may last long. It is not an easy task to strengthen the party. If at all someone ventures for it, it is going to take years. An overhauling is necessary for the party. A restructuring is to be done both in the organisation and in the approaches. A general outlook towards Hindus and focused view towards Dalits and Muslims might have given good returns during the early days. At that

INTELLIGENCE, INSTINCT, REFLEX AND MEMORY

Image
Out of these four, intelligence, instinct, reflex and memory what make one successful in life may be bit confused to answer. Normally one may not be reluctant to answer that it is intelligence that makes one successful. But just think about intelligence without memory. In a classroom all students are listening the teacher almost equally. One may store ninety percent of what teacher taught in memory, the other fifty and the third one ten percent and so on. Here the maximum stored student may answer all the questions the teacher asks and the ten percent one only a very few. The teacher and rest of the students acclaim the well answered student as the most intelligent one. This student may secure very high marks in exams too. Later in life, let us imagine that both ninety percent and ten percent students joined the police. They were part of a team investigating an intrigued case but the success can be with the ten percent one. In such a situation it is not memory that matters.

CAN WE SEE SPIRITS AFTER DEATH?

Image
I think we can see the spirit after the death of a person with the help of a proper equipment. The reasons for this statement is: 1) When we are in a closed room with absolute silence we believe that there is no sound in the room. If we open a transistor radio in the same room, the room will be filled with sounds. The waves that cannot be picked up by our ears are picked up by the transistor radio. Hence our belief about the silence in the room is wrong. 2) Similarly in the same closed room we believe that there is no pictures, but with the help of a TV set we can see so many pictures in different colours. The light waves that our eyes cannot catch are caught by the TV. In both these cases, what the human senses could not pick are picked by equipments. When a star completes its life span it dies, rather collapse. Finally the mass of the star becomes zero (may be minus). Despite this star is physically disappeared it's power of gravity remains, may be in more measures.

BRIBERY IN INDIA

Image
While Denmark and New Zealand are the least corrupt countries in the world, India stands at 80 in a corruption perception index of 174 countries. According to a report of Transparency International in 2015 Indians pay bribes totalling ₹ 21,000 crore every year to access government services. It further says that over 60% people paid bribes to various government departments in the last one year (2019) in eight out of 20 states. In five states Maharashtra, MP,  Uttarakhand, Chattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh over 50% of the population paid bribes to government authorities to get their work done. According to the survey, Punjab, Jharkhand, UP, Rajasthan, Bihar, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are among the states where more than 60% people paid bribe to government departments. In Haryana, Delhi, Gujarat, Odisha, West Bengal Goa and Kerala less than 49% people gave bribes to get their work done in different departments. In 9 states, property and land were the sectors where bribe

DEMAND FOR RESIGNATION OF ELECTED MEMBERS

Image
It has become a practice in our country that members of parliament or assembly elected by the authorised citizens are asked to quit from their respective offices by a group of people from the road. When we have legislative houses for discussions and sharing or differing opinions why the political parties are sending their followers to the road to demand the resignation of any sitting members. The opposition parties in Kerala are now demanding the resignation of the Chief Minister and few other ministers whereas the ruling party wants a central minister and a state MLA to resign. Both of them know that what they are doing is wrong; yet they do it for they are certain that no one will question them. We must find an end to this wrong practice of asking an elected member 'to get out' from where he is by shouting or by posters all over on the road. If the political parties have the will they must frame a law prohibiting such nonsense. In case of any irregularities by any

'DRUNKARDS IN KERALA'

Image
Sucking  the blood of the dying man, is the liquor policy of Kerala State. The successive state governments look for no other options, but liquor to enhance the revenue. Kerala shows the world that liquor trade is is the most profitable business in the world. Profit? 1,000%. A report published in Deccan Chronicle dated June 24, 2019 shows, "A bottle of 750 ml costing Rs 71.60 for KSBC  is sold at Rs 770/-, with govt agency gaining over Rs 700/-. The government agency is the only authorised entity for wholesale and retail sales of alcoholic spirits, including beer and wine in the state. India is a democratic country. Can the people be allowed to be squeezed at this level? In the financial year, 2018-19 the KSBC and Consumer Fed together earned sales turn over of Rs 14,508 crores compared with Rs 11,000 crores in the previous year. The average selling price remaining ten times higher than the purchase price the government would be earning more than Rs 10,000 crores from

MEDIA TODAY

Image
One  of the main contributions for the literacy of the state have come from the print media. Alongwith news from allover, the great human beings who managed the news papers, ensured that the people of the state are fed with good amount of knowledge. In the olden days getting newspaper in the house was a status symbol. That is the story of many decades ago. Now it is all changed. Newspaper is being overtaken by television. Almost all houses in the state have television sets and all are watching it regularly. It is all highly commercialized now. All are looking for money and, therefore, has brought in unethical competition among the media group. A common word 'rating' stand above all other words. All are running all over to push up the rating. Ingredients like politics, crime, sex etc are adequately used to make the programme or writing more tasty. While comparing both visual and print media, visual media have moved far ahead than print media at least in time spent on

COVID 19 PREDICTIONS

Image
There are many predictions related to Coronavirus. We shall go through some of those. 'A severe pneumonia like illness will spread throughout the globe in around 2020, attacking the lungs and bronchial tubes and resisting all known treatments.' A book titled End of Days written by Sylvia Browne made this forecast a decade ago. The book was first published in 2008. It is also said in the book, 'Almost more baffling than the illness itself will be the fact that it will suddenly vanish as quickly as it arrives, attack again ten years later and then disappear completely.' In a novel titled 'The Eyes of Darkness' written by Dean Koontz in 1989 says in page 353 about a fictional virus named  'Wuhan-400'. When social media brought wide publicity to this portion from the book it was disputed by many. 'Wuhan-400 is a perfect weapon. It afflicts only human beings. No other living creature can carry it', the book says. Gina Kolata wrote in The N

CRIME PREVENTION AND CRIME INVESTIGATION

Image
The  series of crime investigation being conducted in Kerala by a number of state and national agencies raise a serious question. The prime function of the police is to prevent crime or to investigate the crime after it is happened. Smuggling of gold, bringing in and taking out foreign and Indian currencies, national and international trade of narcotics, swindling taxes and duties, forgeries in educational qualifications, securing employment by cheating government agencies, fraudulent deals with government financial agencies and the list goes on and on endlessly. Finally when some of these are detected after a number of transactions we can find a crowd of investigation agencies around the suspected. It is like waiting for someone is to be killed and then conduct the autopsy to find the cause of death. It cannot be pointed out as the error of the cops but the error of the system. Under the existing system, anyone is free to do any crime. When a complainant comes up, dependin

WORLD CRIME SCENARIO

COVID 19 - A CHINESE CREATION?

Image
Dr Li Meng Yan There are widespread allegations that the coronavirus that has terrorised the world for the past one year is a Chinese creation. The renowned virologist from Hong Kong Dr Li-Meng Yan claimed that the Covid 19 virus was created in a government laboratory in Wuhan. It is said to be highly mutant virus and other stories brought out by Chinese government  are just a 'smokescreen'. She told in an interview with UK channel ITV that she has evidence to back the claim. When there was a threat to her life she fled to US and took assylum there. "I already know that would happen because I know the corruption among this kind of international organisation like the WHO to China government, and to China Communist Party," she said in the interview. Dr Yan further revealed that the Chinese government is now trying to tarnish her reputation, conduct cyber attacks on her and intimidate her family in China. Earlier, US President Donald Trump

STRIKE BY DOCTORS

Image
Worm infested wounds on the body of a patient who was admitted in the government hospital with injuries and later tested positive for Covid 19 have called for adverse comments from various corners. The relatives of the patients have complained against the medical staff. This has led to an enquiry in the matter by the director of the medical education and subsequently a doctor and two nurses were suspended. Consequent upon the suspension the doctors have boycotted out patients duties. The doctors association has warned that more action may follow if the suspension is not revoked. The doctors, before taking a unilateral action of refusing to attend the out patients, should seriously consider the  fact they are being paid for their services not by the health department or medical association but by people including these out patients coming to them for treatment. If the suspended staff think that the action taken against them is improper in any sense, instead of taking a coerc

NOTHING BAD IN THE WHOLE WORLD

Image
There  is a law behind every action takes place in this universe. Nothing is created or destroyed in the whole universe, but, only transformation happen. The only known creation is the 'tiny particle' before the Big Bang. No one can convincingly explain how this tiny particle was created and how the whole universe what we know today was concealed in it. At some point of time the existing universe may go back to the state of the tiny particle and may be  beyond that to a zero mass and invisible state. If we know all about anything we can certainly foresee as to what would happen to it and when. If that is true the theory can be applied on anything in the whole universe. If anything is created there must be a creator. We may call the creator the Nature, God, Brahma, Allah, Yahweh, Elohim, Theos or any such names. Whatever may be the name, the name holder must be a Super Being with unfathomable intelligence and power. Such a great intelligent power cannot create anythi

INTERPRETATION OF LAW

Image
India  have tons and tons of law in its kitty. All these are the by-products of our constitution. Many features of our constitution are taken from Britain, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia, USSR, France, Germany, South Africa and Japan. The Indian constitution has a preamble and 470 articles, which are grouped into 25 parts, with 12 schedules and 5 appendices and has amended 104 times so far. It has 1,17,369 words in English language. There are 672 District courts and 25 High courts in India. The total number of judges sanctioned in the high court's are 1079. The Supreme Court has one Chief Justice and 30 other judges. According to Bar Council of India there are about 20 lakh advocates in the country. The chief function of the court is to adjudicate legal disputes between parties and carry out the administration of justice in accordance with the rule of law. This is the basic network of our law and justice. The oral arguments in a court are spoken presentation to a judge

RAPE AND DEATH OF DALIT GIRL AND ALLEGED THREAT TO THE FAMILY BY DM

Image
We Indians should be ashamed to call ourselves as the citizens of the largest democracy in the world. A 19 years old poor Dalit girl was gang raped, cut out her tongue, pulled out her eyes and she died in the hospital a few days back. As per the news appeared in the Times of India dated  2nd October 2020, the District Magistrate visited her house in Hathras, UP and threatened her family members. The administration by this act wants that the members of the family of the bereaved should change their complaint of rape and other heinous crimes. The office of DM supposed to ensure law and order in its administrative region coming out in open to support the criminals. Law and order situation of a state cannot fall below this level! Since the poor and Dalits lost their confidence in the civil administration it is now the judiciary to rise to the occasion and establish justice. Judiciary may, therefore order for a high level enquiry in the matter and prohibit all influences by the
