DEMOLITION OF FLATS IN KOCHI

Four  high rise buildings have been razed down in Kochi recently for flouting Coastal Zone Regulation norms. These were in the range of 16 to 18 floors with an average height of 50 meters consisting of a total number of 343 flats. Altogether these had an estimated plinth area of around 7 lakh F2 and estimated cost of around ₹ 200 crores.

What is the reason behind the wastage of such valuable resources of the state? There is only one answer to this. When corruption is ruling all over, law is thrown into waste basket. In India, when a rich or not so rich one is about to commit something illegal, someone may remind him with the consequences and the answer get usually is 'no problem'. It means he can sort out any problem with money. In this flat case too, before starting the construction, the builder cannot be considered to have kept unaware of the CZR norms. When reminded he too must have said 'no problem'. Each over confident individual buyer of the flats too must have repeated the words 'no problem'. Finally, when the apex court took the whip, the 'no' was erased from the 'no problem' and the one left is only 'problem'. Let this be the eye opener for the people of the whole country who frequently use the words 'no problem'.

However, one noose remains to be opened in the whole combined episode. These tall constructions were not made secretly or during overnight. All the required formalities like sanctions, approvals, registrations etc must have got fulfilled by each builder and each buyer. Over and above, many high officials passing through that area must have noticed the illegal construction but unfortunately none could open their mouth or lift their pen. It is further amazing that the government have collected  stamp paper value and all other registration fees and taxes towards this illegal transaction. It is also part of our law that sharing the price of an illegal trade is an offense. All such elected representatives and highly paid officials are moving around scot-free. Let us believe that the honorable judiciary shall soon take out another whip against all of them.
