PROTEST AGAINST PROTESTS

Protest is the basic right of the people under any form of governments. Different methods are adopted by different sects of people to express their dissent. Harthal, Bundh, Gherao etc are the common methods used in India. All of these used to suspend work and discontinue public services. Throwing stones to damage, burn and destroy, killing etc are the harder forms of protest. Harmless forms like streaking, topless procession etc are also used to attract the authorities concerned. Most of these protests have their origin during the freedom struggle. These were to express the dissension of the people against the foreign governments ruled us, but now we are setting our own houses ablaze.

Having wedded to democracy our protest also should be governed by democratic norms. All types of protest of today have one common goal, maximum distress to the people. The impetus behind any protest under the leadership of any political party is nothing but to get their presence felt. To achieve anything for the people by the tool of protest is only a byproduct. More the hardship to the people more is the success of the protest.. If inflicting trouble to the people is to achieve anything good for any section of the society, it can be earned in a peaceful way with no harm to anyone. The first thing to consider while raising a demand to the government or any authority is whether the demand stand good within the frame work of law. If not any form of strike is a mere gimmick. It should be sternly dealt with

In order to overcome the issue the government may set up Public Grievance Redressing Forum in every district headed by the district collector concerned.Instead of going for a strike let the aggrieved bring up the issue  to the Forum. The Forum must hear all concerned and deliver their verdict within a given period of time which should be made binding to all concerned. If the verdict is not acceptable to either of the parties let this be refereed to a state level Forum. The decision of this Forum should be made mandatory with a provision of appeal in the high court only. This arrangement will not only relieve the people from frequent aggression by political parties but also avoid parallel governments both within the legislature and in the streets simultaneously

The days are not far to see protest against protests.
