CLEANLINESS IN OUR COUNTRY ALONG WITH POWER GENERATION
We Indians, surprisingly may not have the sense of cleanliness as required by our environment. Whether it is village, town or city heaps of waste can be found anywhere. There is no effective methods for collection of waste from houses and public places. When there are countless number of boards found at different places saying: 'Don't throw waste here', it is difficult to find any board anywhere saying 'Put waste here'. If places are allocated and proper boards are put people may reach there and dump their waste there.
According to available source the amount of municipal solid waste (waste that comes from homes, businesses and other community activities) in India was above 1,70,300 tons per day in the financial year 2022. Over 50% of these waste is combustible. This shows that over 85,000 tons of combustible waste are available with us every day. The following countries in the world are generating electricity from municipal waste. USA, China, Japan, Germany, France, UK, Indonesia, Croatia etc are among the the top countries in the world in power generation with municipal waste. As per the report of IRENA China produced 82,250 MWh (2019) and USA 63,194 MWh power with these waste. From the existing installed capacity of 3,382 GW from the source of waste shall be increased to 11,174 GW by 2030; it is estimated .
In India we have 12 operational and 8 non operational power plants in 10 states using MSW and Industrial waste. We have the potential to generate 5,690 MW of power from waste. If we can use the available waste in the country we can produce over 50,000 MW of power. We may seriously look at it.
According to available information the state of Kerala is generating over 10,000 tonnes of MSW per day. If properly utilised this can generate about 3000 MW of power. This can substantiate our power requirements for the time being.
Further to this, a systematical collection of the waste can ensure the cleanliness of our state/country and also may attract more tourists and we may have much better health level.
