SHOULD WE STOP ENGLISH MEDIUM SCHOOLS?

For quite sometime people from some corners come out with their opinions about English medium schools in India. They say we do not need any English medium schools. Prima facie it looks to be a suggestion worth considering. The English have kept us as slaves for centuries.  We have fought against them for long and earned the freedom. When we have become free, do our best and climbing fast on the ladder of progress to be a developed country why should we learn the language of our so called masters of yesterday.

We Indians are in no dearth of language. About 78% of Indians speak different languages from the family of Indo-Aryan language and about 19% speak Dravidian languages. When we have our own traditional languages used for milleniums why should we adopt a foreign language. However, the youth of today not only try to learn English but also many European, American, African and Asian languages for their livelihood.

We have all the resources to deploy entire youth of India irrespective of their academic and other qualifications. Unfortunately, right from day one from independence we avoided this for some reasons. We don't have to set right the backlog now. We may look forward for accommodating our youth at the earliest. Then we may think about closing down English medium schools.

We must also remember the fact that despite having the most ideal expertise and other necessary resources to present India as the best educational hub in the world, we are sending our youth even to Ukraine for medical education. Those who are suggesting to close down English medium schools are encouraging them to learn even Ukranian language. Hence let us forget about closing English medium schools on petty reasons, but try to learn more and more foreign languages to bring India on top of the world.
