TRAVELLING IN KERALA, EYES AT RISK

ON 2nd Oct,2013, a young woman named Preetha, a resident of Kottayam, employed as a nurse at Hyderabad was hit by a stone thrown from out side while traveling in the S 3 coach of Thiruvananthapuram - Hyderabad, Sabari Express. Her left eye is seriously injured. After first aid at the railway hospital at Palakkad she is shifted to medical college, Trissur. for surgery. This incident took p[lace between Mankara and Parali stations. Similar incident was reported at Palakkad a week ago. This heinous crime is repeatedly happening throughout the rail length of Kerala. I n every case the stone is thrown by either a child, or a youth or an elder. Of course, not by an animal because those poor creatures do not do such atrocious crimes. Malayalees have become sadists? An average Malayalee, I think,  is not bothered for others loss, others damages,  others torture, others injuries and ultimately others death . It is high time for our sociologist and educationists to wake up and try...

WASTE MANAGEMENT - THE BEST WAY

We have been seeking remedies for large number of issues for quite some time. Our gray haired experts could not resolve any of these issues despite their hard efforts.. We have enough money and enough other resources to sort out the problems, but the result is not applaudable. While looking at these undying issues let us not forget the fact that we have unmeasurable and untiring intelligence in waiting, that too, one of the best in the world. W e should not hesitate to hand over the most complex issues.to our youth. They are very intelligent, they are very powerful and they are massive in strength. Let us first ask them to find a solution for waste management. This is the one issue the authorities concerned are accusing one another for their failures, but till now no one could offer a reasonable solution. Ask the youth, the solution should be cost effective, time saving and easy to handle. Try to include all students from high school onwards. The proposal should not be confined to...

DEMOCRACY TO BE REFINED

As in any other system of governments democracy too has its own deficiencies. The most significant discrepancy of democracy is -' ruling by the elected from the legislature and simultaneously ruling by the people from the streets'. A government elected by the majority of the voters can be brought down by the minority opposition by acting from the streets is a very dangerous expression in democracy. Democracy has become like a stone left the catapult. A braham Lincoln on November 19, 1863 in the famous Gettysburg address defined democracy "...... a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal .......... and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." This is recognized as the fundamental concept of  democracy. The subsequent rulers, however,  have deviated too far from the basic law, therefore, the ruled started loosing faith in existing form of democratic gov...

ROAD ACCIDENTS - BRING DOWN TO ZERO

According to Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Govt. of India, there were 4,90,383 road accidents in India during 2012 resulting in 1,38,258 deaths and causing injuries to 5,09,667 people. These numbers translate into nearly one road accident every minute, and one road accident death every 4 mts. More than half of the victims are in the economically active age group of 25-65 years, i.e., the loss of the main brad winner. R oad traffic accidents are amenable to remedial action like traffic management, design and quality of road infrastructure, application of intelligent transport systems, safer vehicles, law enforcement, effective and quick accident response and care etc. This could become possible with the involvement of health, transport and police. A ccording to World Health Organisation over 1.24 million people killed world wide caused by road accidents in the year 2010. Half of all road accident deaths are among pedestrians, cyclists and motor cyclists. Those aged...

RUPEE HIJACKED?

Measures taken by government to avert the collapse of rupee could not yield results, because the reason for the fall could not be identified. W hy the spurt of demand for dollar? Where all the dollars have gone? Is the theory 'demand and supply' stands good in the case of dollar? Can this be artificially created? Can any country corner dollars from our court yard? Can it be an internal sabotage? W hatever it may be, there can be a new economic theory- artificial/forced devaluation. KVGeorge Kerala, India

PROTEST AGAINST PROTESTS

Protest is the basic right of the people under any form of governments. Different methods are adopted by different sects of people to express their dissent. Harthal, Bundh, Gherao etc are the common methods used in India. All of these used to suspend work and discontinue public services. Throwing stones to damage, burn and destroy, killing etc are the harder forms of protest. Harmless forms like streaking, topless procession etc are also used to attract the authorities concerned. Most of these protests have their origin during the freedom struggle. These were to express the dissension of the people against the foreign governments ruled us, but now we are setting our own houses ablaze. H aving wedded to democracy our protest also should be governed by democratic norms. All types of protest of today have one common goal, maximum distress to the people. The impetus behind any protest under the leadership of any political party is nothing but to get their presence felt. To achieve a...

YES, ASTROLOGY IS A SCIENCE

YES, ASTROLOGY IS A SCIENCE A strology gave birth to astronomy or vice verse is something yet to be resolved. The primitive man looked at the celestial bodies with curiosity and fear. By trial and error method he looked at the familiar bodies for their impact on him. This process after continuous evolution reached to days all cosmic sciences. U ntil Galelio there is nothing much to say about astronomy as a science. However during 4000BC Chinese could record eclipse. The pyramids were constructed in 2500 BC, lines of standing stones at Carnac and Stonehenge erected at Salisbury by megalithic observers in 2000 BC are exceptions. The Babylonians prepared a calender based on the regular cycle of the moon. Since 3000 BC they used zodiac signs similar to that of today. Galelio's telescopic observation in 1609,  Johannes Keplers laws of planetary motion (1st two laws in 1609 and 3rd law in 1619),  Newtons law of gravitation in 1666, Greenwich observatory founded in London in 1675, ...
