CAN WE ENSURE SAFETY OF WOMEN IN OUR COUNTRY
Norway ranks top in the world for safety of women. Women can travel through the isolated streets or busy cities any time during day or night without the slightest apprehension. Can an Indian women ever imagine about this in her own country? Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Luxembourg, Switzerland,. Sweden, Austria, UK, Netherlands etc are also safe countries for women. Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen are in the bottom of the list as far as safety of women is concerned.
The Women's Peace and Safety Index shows the worst countries in the world as per their rankings below.
1. Afghanistan 2. Syria 3 . Yemen 4. Pakistan 5. Iraq
12. Somalia 17. Bangladesh
22. India.
This list is not a honour for our country. We may be looked down by the world. Who are responsible for this situation? Not one but many. The number one is our successive governments. If proper identification and stringent punishments were ensured we could have ensured safety for women in our country. If safety of women is included in the school syllabus from Class 4 to Class 12 in various densities, we could have expected better behaviour from the upcoming youth. Then comes our irresponsible political parties. Women's safety is not in their agenda at all. The people should ensure that such parties are not elected to power. All our religions have their own share in this matter. They don't find time to give necessary advice to their followers regarding the safety and security of their mothers, sisters, daughters etc. Above all, the women themselves hold responsibility for this situation. I don't suggest that they should conduct long rallies, large meetings and any protest activities. Our women are now holding high positions in the country. There are many in the administrative and police services. There are MLAs and MPs. There are eminent writers and orators. They all can discuss with each other and suggest ways and means to ensure safety and security for women of all ages within the house and outside. If they take a start soon they can have a result.
I have the following suggestions. The foremost one is amend our law suitably to ensure stringent punishment for all those who commit sexual offences against women. If he is an employed one, should be dismissed forthwith and should not be considered for any government job in the future. If such one is an elected person to any position he should be dismissed and should not be allowed to contest any election in the future. Those who commit petty offences should be send to an open jail for six months where they should be got reformed by reputed persons, like teachers, doctors, writers, religious leaders, psychologists and psychiatrists, retired police officers etc.
