CRIME AGAINST WOMEN

Crime against women is very much on the rise in Kerala. This state has become unsafe for women. Why our men are behaving like this? We must find an answer to this before we look for a remedy. I would like to give various reasons for this sexual aberration rather wild behavior that does not fit to the highly boasted Indian culture.

* Lack of stringent punishment for the offenders.

* Easy to escape after committing the offence.

* Our men are sexually starved.

* Lack of adequate sex education in school.

* Less opportunity for male and female to mingle with each other.

* No knowledge about human sex.

* Geographical reasons.

* The food habits.

* Wild fantasy from mental contrast.

* Addiction to alcohol/narcotics

* Lack of Civic sense

* Ignorance of law.

Some incidents are quoted below to help the reader to analyse the cause behind the act. 1) A foreign woman was walking from KSRTC stand to central junction Kottayam, a distance of about 200 meters. During this few minutes in open day light twelve different men had intentionally touched her body. (The woman herself had revealed this during an interview with a reputed publication from Kottayam a few years ago) 2) A private bus conductor had criminally touched the breast of a school girl while she was getting down from the bus in the afternoon within Ernakulam city. The culprit was caught by the police. (This was appeared in the media about an year ago) 3) A 91 year old woman was raped and thrown to the way side by a young man a couple of years ago in the northern Kerala. (This too was appeared in the media) 4) A middle aged man had raped a four months old child in the central Kerala about an year ago. (Widely discussed in the media).5) Many women of different ages were raped and killed in different parts of the state in the recent past.

Can we say that all these are to appease the biological need of men? If not, what is it all about? It is high time that eminent people from various walks of life including sociologists, psychologists, sexologists, nutritionists and physiologists should sit together and discuss the matter extensively to find the reasons for this abnormal behavior of men from this part of the earth and suggest remedial measures. The government as a whole must involve themselves in this very significant matter at the earliest convenience.
