NOSTRADAMUS ON KERALA

Michel de Nostre-Dame is known all over the world as Nostradamus. He was a French astrologer, physician and seer. His book Les Propheties is a collection of 942 poetic prediction of future events. This book was first published in 1555. Nostradamus was born in France in 1503 and died in July 1566. He belonged to a Jewish family. On 1st July 1566 night, before going to sleep, Nostradamus told his secretary, Jean de Chavigny, "You will not find me alive at sunrise." The next morning he was found dead lying on the floor. Many of his supporters agree that he had predicted the Great Fire of London, the French Revolution, the rises of Napoleon, Hitler and Donald Trump, both world wars and the nuclear destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The assassination of John F Kennedy, the Apollo moon landing in 1969, the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986, the death of Diana, the Princess of Wales in 1997 and the September 11 attacks on the world trade centre in 2001 also claimed t

CONSOLATION FROM JUDICIARY

All those incidents  took place in the university campus in Thiruvananthapuram recently put a few things under suspicion. They are:1) The academic ranking by the universities in Kerala 2) The sports quota allotment for government employment 3) Selection methods by the PSC. Since these are very much concerned with the common man, he wants to know whether our existing law allows the judiciary to voluntarily interfere in the matter and issue order for a thorough enquiry in the whole thing's including, i) calling for explanation from the government ii) the concerned ministers' default, if any iii) report from the university. There must be some officials who are responsible for this flaw. Since the people cannot expect any remedial measures from the existing political system they can only repose their faith in the judiciary. KV George

ENERGY SCENARIO IN KERALA

The recent announcement of the electricity minister of Kerala that power cut/regulation will be imposed in the coming days might have induced many to delve into the energy scenario of the state. While Kerala is one of the six Indian states along with TN, AP, Punjab, Goa and Gujarat where every household has access to electricity, the scenario is not so coveted now. We all know that energy has a pivotal role to play in the socio-economic development and human welfare of a country. Economic growth of a country is very much depend upon an efficient and sustainable supply of energy. Uninterrupted supply of power significantly contribute for industrial development, employment generation, export of goods and services, trading activities and the much needed revenue generation of the state. If the state can pump in more money for power generation  the state can become financially stable. However the successive governments have not given adequate attention  to meet the demand and supply of powe

FUEL PRICE

People of India have given another opportunity to Sri Narendra Modi as Prime Minister. Among other things the people have expected that the new government will bring down the fuel price and thereby try to check the price rise of all other commodities. Surprisingly, instead of reducing  the price the government has increased the price again considerably. Now, since the exorbitant burden of fuel price is bolstered by the people,  they have the right to have the analysis of the price of fuel. The petroleum ministry may try to furnish the following information to the people at the earliest convenience. 1. Purchase price of crude 2. Shipping charge (say upto Kochi         port) 3. Unloading and pumping     charge to refinery 4. Refinery expenses 5. Storage expenses (if any) 6. Any other expenses by the refinery 7. Cost of distribution to the dealers 8. Dealer's commission. 9. Profit earned by the petroleum     company. 10.Taxes and duties. 11. Net sale price of petrol and

INDIA IN THE WORLD CUP

Ind ia is now safe in the final round of the world cup. The journey so far was not so safe. India could convincingly defeat some strong teams. Just managed to win against some weak teams. Meekly surrendered to England. The one match left with is against Sri Lanka. That may not be a cake walk for India. Since the outcome of this match has no significance for us, it may be looked as a practice match for the final show. The results of the final round matches shall depend upon the days play irrespective of the opposition teams. Best wishes for Team India! KV George

BRIBERY - A PAT OR PUNISHMENT

It is high time that the central and state governments should take firm decision on bribery. There are two options for the governments. (1) Recognise bribery and make it free from any punishments. (2) Enact strict, time bound and simple law for punishments for any bribery involving anyone. Remove all ifs and buts from the law and make it too simple. There should be a penalty of ten times the money involved and a maximum of one month time for the enquiry. If found true the person concerned should be dismissed forth with and the appropriate jail term should be awarded. Only two categories of people are involved in bribery cases. They are government employees and politicians. Both of them, irrespective of their status, should be dealt with severely. If the governments cannot do this make out a law exempting bribery from any offence. May take a decision and do it fast. KV George
